Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Test Report

The Redmi Note 7 is the starting signal for the independence of the Redmi sub-brand. While the current best mid-size smartphone "Redmi Note 6 Pro" was confusingly similar to the Redmi Note 5, the Redmi Note 7 is now setting new standards in the middle class. The notch gets much smaller, the camera gets better and the hardware stronger – even a USB-C port can now be found in the cheap mobile phone. Probably inspired by the Mi8 Lite, the Redmi Note 7 gets a glass back and a new design donation.

 

Design and workmanship

In this point, the device is not only haptically extremely different from its predecessor, but also visually new accents are set. The mini notch (Waterdrop Notch) above the display really only includes the camera. Redmi has also set in at the edges around the display. Despite a larger display compared to its predecessor, the Redmi Note 7 hasn't really got bigger: 159.21 × 75.21 × 8.2 mm – Redmi Note 6 Pro: 158 x 76.5 x 8.5.

 

The beautifully painted frame and glass back create a haptic premium feel, as in the upper class. The 186.5 grams also convey a high-quality feeling and the weight remains very close to the predecessor (RN6 Pro: 182g). The power button and the volume controller on the right outside are made of plastic. The pressure point is very pleasant and the buttons are excellently incorporated. A black bar is still between the display and the beautifully painted plastic frame.

Scope of delivery of the Redmi Note 7

Except for the now mandatory silicone protective case, the scope of delivery looks a bit mau. A display protection film would have been quite nice and the Quick-Charge adapter also saved. Of course, the standard 5V/2A EU charging adapter and a USB-Type C cable are available.

Display with mini notch

The Redmi Note 7 now measures 6.3 inches in the diagonal in a 19.5:9 ratio. The front camera, nestled in the drop notch, protrudes 9mm from above and is only 8mm wide. The edges around the display aren't entirely flagship worthy then, though. At the top it is 4mm, left and quite 2.5mm and below 7.5mm.

 

Nevertheless: Absolute peaks for the price and compared to the competition. The display dissolves with 2340 x 1080 pixels, bringing it to razor-sharp 409 pixels per inch. For an IPS display, the contrast is compelling, but you can of course see the backlight on black surfaces. The display corners are nicely rounded (Rounded Corners display) and likewise, this is the area around the Waterdrop Notch. Only with white backgrounds, however, does a kind of shadow occur, which becomes visible at the edges of the display. However, this is not bleeding in the true sense of the word. In practice, this fact hardly matters, but I wanted to mention it here. The maximum brightness of the Redmi Note 7 display is 550 cd/m2 ² and is sufficient for unrestricted use even on sunny days. The viewing angle stability is excellent and even at different angles nothing changes accordingly.

Performance and system

The Redmi Note 7 can also upgrade the processor. The Snapdragon 660 is simply one of the best processors under 300 € and so the Redmi Note 7 easily equals to a Mi8 Lite or Mi A2. Only a Pocophone or Meizu X8 offers under the 300 € mark an even faster chipset. Our Chinese trial has 6 / 64GB of memory, which is a welcome new option - unfortunately there is only one version for Europe with 3 / 32GB and one version with 4 / 64GB. A 6GB RAM version remains reserved for the Chinese market. However, even with 4GB RAM in practice, you hardly notice any limitation in multitasking. The speed in the system and the gaming performance are simply the hammer for such a cheap smartphone. The Snapdragon 660 clocks slightly faster in the 2.2GHz power cluster than the SD636 in the RN6 Pro. The same applies to the Adreno 512 GPU, which is also clocked higher. In practice, you do not necessarily feel the difference between SD636 and SD660.

 

The reading/writing wheel of the 64GB eMMC 5.1 memory is 286/186MB/s, both of which are excellent values. UFS storage can't be expected in this price range yet and here you can feel and see the difference to a Pocophone F1. The 6.5GB/s speed of the LPDDR4X RAM also looks good so far. Especially when multitasking, the smartphone runs very fluently and apps in the cache are displayed in an arrow-fast manner. Whether you access the 3 or 4GB RAM version depends on the individual usage behavior. Few users resort to 3GB, normal users to 4GB.

 

The Redmi Note 7 easily handles current games. Here and there are small lags that do not appear on an SD845, but the RN7 is not a gaming smartphone. Even graphically demanding games such as PubG, Asphalt or Marvel CoC are easily playable. Navigation in the system is always fluid and commands are implemented directly – the difference to the upper class is narrowing. Here, however, more of the UFS memory plays than the processor plays a role.

Redmi Note 7 with MIUI 10.2 on Android 9 Pie base

The Redmi Note 7 runs on a brand new MIUI 10.2.3.0 system on Android 9 basis. Meanwhile, Xiaomi also takes care of the Google security patch and this is mostly up to date. MIUI is one of the most adapted systems and offers not only its own look, but also a huge pile of additional settings.

In particular, MIUI's notification and battery management is excellent to use. Furthermore, you can assign / deny specific permissions to individual apps in the security center. This now works more clearly and everything in one place. With the Theme App, the entire design can be customized and you can also visually customize and swap the icons in the Quick Launch bar.

Connectivity and communication

With regard to connectivity, the Redmi Note 7 does not change too much. In the Global version, the following network frequencies are available: 2G: GSM: B2 / 3/5/8 3G: WCDMA / UMTS: B 1/2/4/5/8 4G: FDD-LTE: B 1/2 / 3/4/5/7/8/20/28 4G: TDD-LTE: B 38/40 The quality of the conversation shines with a high volume on the large auricle and good voice transmission. Helpful here is sometimes the second noise-canceling microphone on the top.

 

Otherwise, as with its predecessor, there are Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band Wifi with .ac standard. Both work without disturbances or interruptions. The WiFi reception shines with high range and high data throughput (30Mbit of my 50 Mbit cable arrive, 2 walls and 15 meters from the router).

 

For navigation the services GPS, AGPS, GLONASS and Beidou are supported. The signal is strong and there were no problems either as a pedestrian or in the car. To sensors Xiaomi packs to the standards even a gyroscope, an e-compass and an infrared transmitter in the luggage. Participation in the contactless payment revolution, however, will be denied to Redmi-Note users because NFC is not available.

 

Fans of FM Radio will definitely be happy with the Redmi Note 7, because this is also on board. I've tested the radio pincushion extra while jogging and the quality stays good even when jogging, with little interference. The 3.5mm jack is Xiaomi typically absolutely convincing. Loud and crystal clear, the sound comes with decent headphones from the connection. Alternatively, you can now use USB Type C headphones. The media speaker is a mono speaker on the bottom and has a very high volume. Bass is missing as usual, but nothing is overdriven and the sound is alright.

Battery life

For 10 days, the Redmi Note 7 was my daily driver and only needed to be plugged in every 2-2.5 days. The stand-by consumption is already very well optimized and overnight (7 hours) disappear only 2-4% battery (no flight mode!). One hour of YouTube over Wi-Fi eats only 6% of battery, which theoretically 15 hours Youtube streaming are in it. In the PC Mark battery test with mixed use the smartphone creates 12 hours runtime at 200cd / m² brightness - an hour more than its predecessor. Redmi can certainly optimize even further, so the signs are good and the battery life of the Redmi Note 7 is already awesome. 9-10 hours with the display on, I had until the charging process on the clock. These are also top values.

 

From QC4 + we speak as soon as we exceed the magic 18W brand when charging. With my Power Delivery 3 Charging Adapter I achieved with the Xiaomi Mix 3 50% in just 30 minutes (equivalent to 1600 mAh). In Redmi Note 7 you can reach 35% battery in 30 minutes, which corresponds to 1400 mAh for a 4000 battery. So here is the loading time of the hammer, but not quite on QC4 + level. It stays at a maximum of 18W charging speed. Finally, the Redmi Note 7 is fully charged with a Power Delivery or Quick Charge 3 charger in 1 hour and 20 minutes. For 4000 mAh a damn good value. The supplied (not QC) charging adapter takes 2 hours and 15 minutes to fully charge the Redmi 7.
