Design

Starting with the superficial, the first thing that comes to light is that both models have a circular shape. The Xiaomi Mi is a white vacuum robot similar in size to the grey Roomba 960, but a little taller.

Roomba 960

While the Xiaomi robot has a diameter of 34.5 cm and a thickness of 9.6 cm, the Roomba robot measures 35 cm in diameter and 9.1 cm high. Although this half centimeter is a very small difference, it can be an obstacle to pass under some furniture.

If this seems irrelevant to you, you may not know the story of the Dyson Eye 360, an excellent vacuum robot that was going to eat the world and failed simply because it was too tall. However, the difference compared to the Roomba in that case was not 5 millimeters, but 2 centimeters.

The controls that present both models are scarce, since the idea is to program them remotely. A very big CLEAN button to turn on the robot manually and a HOME button to activate the synchronization. The Roomba 960 also has a third button (SPOT) to clean a specific surface.

The only notable difference in the design is the location of the filter. The Xiaomi cleaning robot has the filter at the top. This new design from the Chinese brand makes maintenance easier. For its part, the Roomba 960 maintains its philosophy of placing the filter at the bottom.

Power

The performance of a vacuum robot depends on several factors, as it answers two key questions. "What can this robot vacuum cleaner do?" and "How good are the results?".

Let's start with the cleaning mechanism everyone uses. The two brands share the same engine supplier, but the Xiaomi Mi robot has a more powerful engine (Nidec DC) than the Roomba 960 robot. Specifically, the suction capacity is 2,000 PA in the Xiaomi and 1,670 PA in the Roomba.

Contrary to what might seem, this does not guarantee that the Chinese robot will have more suction. The difference is that the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner requires less motor because it uses a lot of the brush system, while the Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaner focuses all its efforts on the vacuum cleaner. So, both robots have a similar suction capacity.

Regarding the big question that is always asked to a robot vacuum cleaner. Does it catch the hair of pets? The answer is yes in both cases. Thanks to the great power of both robots, the smooth absorption of pet hair is guaranteed.

Another common quality in both robotic vacuum cleaners is that they work on large surfaces. Thanks to the mapping system that we will discuss later, they can understand the layout of the entire house to do an efficient complete cleaning or focus only on a few rooms.

Versatility

The second point to take into account is the type of soil on which the vacuum robot can work. In general, the two robots can work perfectly on all types of floors (ceramic, wood, marble, carpets and rugs). However, the Xiaomi robot sometimes has problems with black carpets because it confuses them with stairs and passes by.

In this sense, the Roomba robot has no drawbacks, it's a real all-terrain vehicle. In addition, it features Carpet Boost technology, which identifies carpets and increases power up to 10 times to absorb all the dirt embedded in the fabric. For the corners, both robots have a rotating side brush that gives excellent results.

However, of the two models only the Roborock S50 is a 2 in 1 vacuum robot. Thus, the second generation Chinese vacuum robot vacuums and passes the mop, so it works in dry and wet.

Program

As you have seen in the initial table, these two vacuum robots are both programmable and have WiFi. This means that you can synchronize them with your smartphone through the corresponding App to determine which days and times of the week you want to clean your house.

Take the opportunity to clean when you're not at home and ask the robot vacuum cleaner from anywhere!

By comparing the two models in this respect, the Roomba 960 has proven to be the best robot vacuum cleaner. Especially when it comes to the app.

The iRobot Home App included in the Roomba 960 is an improved, simple and complete version. With very intuitive controls, you can customize the cleaning process as much as possible. In addition to the usual time parameters, it also lets you decide which rooms to clean or the number of passes.

As if that weren't enough, to improve results with experience, the robot generates reports with which you can check the areas where more dirt accumulates and requires more maintenance than normal. In addition, you can control the location of your robot vacuum cleaner at all times through the smartphone to not lose track.

For its part, the Xiaomi robot is also programmable through the application my Home App, but this platform still leaves a little to be desired. It's true that you can also customize the cleaning, access statistics and locate the robot, but the application is a complicated in some respects is not fully translated into Spanish. Some sections of the menu are not even in English, but in the original Chinese language.

Navigation system

In this aspect we have a tie again, because the two robotic vacuum cleaners have excellent intelligent cleaning systems.

Xiaomi roborock s50 vs iRobot Roomba 960

The Xiaomi Roborock S50 is considered the best Chinese vacuum robot precisely because of its intelligence. It has 12 laser sensors and a 360-degree radar that allow you to generate a virtual map of the house to identify the shape and extent of the surface to clean. On the other hand, it also includes the SLAM algorithm in its system (one of the best systems that exist, also used by high-end brands such as Neato or Dyson). This algorithm studies the map to plan the optimal cleaning route.

Thus, the Xiaomi robot guarantees on the one hand that the route traced is the most efficient, it does not make nonsense turns. On the other hand, this technology also ensures that no corner will go unattended. Two birds with one stone.

If we now look at the intelligence of the Roomba 960, it becomes evident that the performance is also extraordinary. First, the iAdapt 2.0 navigation system also creates a virtual map for the robot to recognize the terrain. From here, this model also traces an efficient route for executing the cleanup. The style and procedure are different from the Xiaomi robot, but equally effective.

In this case, the Roomba robot has Dirt Detect sensors that locate areas with accumulated dirt for more thorough cleaning. On the other hand, it circumvents obstacles while cleaning them, also brushing the furniture legs.

Autonomy

Obviously, two top-quality robots have the basic systems of autonomous operation to spare. Anti-fall and anti-collision sensors and automatic return to the base to recharge when the battery runs out. At this level these qualities are no longer in question.

Also in these cases, due to their developed intelligence systems, we don't have to worry about the robot getting disoriented and lost in the house.

What should be considered in any model is its battery, better in the Chinese vacuum robot. While the Roomba 960 needs to return to base after 75 minutes of operation, the Xiaomi Mi offers more than 2 hours of autonomy.

Maintenance

Here the winner changes again. The Roomba 960 robot has a larger tank, 0.75 litres compared to the 0.42 litres of the Xiaomi robot, so it needs to be emptied less frequently. In addition, the iRobot model has a full tank sensor that tells you when emptying is necessary.

On the other hand, if there's a model that's going to get stuck, it's probably not the Roomba 960. Thanks to its innovative anti-tangle system, it's very difficult to block, so you'll never find it lying around the house.

Conclusions

After this extensive explanation, how about a summary to draw conclusions from the mourning?

● Design: Shape, size and elements are practically identical.

● Power: Tie. Both have great suction power, although the Roomba 960 performs better in carpets.

● Programming: The Roomba 960 wins for the App, as the Xiaomi application needs several improvements.

● Navigation system: Although the technology and style are different, both can clean the whole house effectively and efficiently.

● Versatility: The Xiaomi Roborock S50 wins for being 2 in 1, because in addition to vacuuming also passes the mop.

● Battery: The Xiaomi Roborock S50 wins. Its battery lasts much longer and allows you to do more work without recharging.

● Maintenance: The Roomba 960 wins. A larger tank, the fill sensor and the anti-tangle system reduce maintenance requirements to a minimum.

As you can see, despite the slight advantages of the Roomba 960 the duel is very even. So, the price will be the determining factor. For this reason, we continuously review the market to select the best offer for each robot vacuum cleaner.
