Xiaomi smart plug WiFi version vs ZigBee version: what are the difference?

By  Adan Flannigan 2019-07-19 3312 0

Since Xiaomi has a wide range of different gadgets in smart home. I'm going to talk about the smart pluag. How the ZigBee version differs from the Wi-fi socket.

What's in the package

Same little box of white cardboard. All sensors are packed in almost the same way and the socket is no exception.

In terms of its technical parameters, current is 10 A, power up to 2.5 kW. ZigBee version socket is quite similar to its WiFi version. The differences is in the control protocol, you should operate  ZigBee version plug with Mi Multi-functional Gateway.

Appearance

In term of the outlooks, it is easily confused these two version. Xiaomi smart plug ZigBee version is parallelepiped and white. It supports European, American and Chinese (Australian) plugs. At the bottom there is a blue LED indicating the status of the socket activity.

The plug is CN. You'll need an adapter to work in European outlets. Sockets with universal connectors, such as those used in Xiaomi extension cords, have no adapters.

The socket has one physical button - which is used for pairing with the sluice initially, and then, if necessary, for manual activation/deactivation (here I mean the power supply to the socket-controlled device).

If you compare it next to a wi-fi socket, you can see that the ZigBee version is a little bit of the same, by about 4 mm.

Outlet connection

Similar to other ZigBee sensor, it is controlled by the Xiaomi Gateway. Select the socket in the list, then press the button and pair the socket with the gateway.

 Outlet connection

Unlike WiFi vision, you can choose the type of icon for the outlet, depending on the type of connected load. In my case, the water heater. After that, the device appears in the general list and installs the control plugin. In the plugin, you can see the main and key difference between ZigBee and Wi-Fi sockets, it's power consumption measurement. It's what makes it possible not only to manage, but also to monitor - that's what I need.

Outlet connection

Let's go back to the outlet control plugin. From the main page of the plugin you can disable, set timers or countdown timers - just like in the Wi-Fi version of the outlet. In the main menu, to the standard options smart scenes, descriptions, basic settings and the ability to add to the list of main devices added their own unique.

It is possible to change the icon, depending on the controlled device the second screenshot. The ability to set the renewal of the state of the socket after a power outage, the option to protect the charge, apparently disconnects the socket after the load current drops - is not checked, the task is different for me, and the ability to turn off the LED indicator - is important for those who prevent its glow.

Conveniently, an icon that shows the status of the socket activity and allows it to be turned on and off appears in the Control Panel line of the gateway control plugin.

The most important thing for me is to calculate my energy consumption. From the main page of the plugin, from left to right, there are data on consumption consumption per day, month and in the form of a time schedule by days, weeks or months.

The other functions are similar to the WiFi version. Setting of switching on and off is possible through the timers menu. In this case, the plug outlet is completely independent of either the Chinese clouds or the Internet. In scripts, the socket works only as an action and offers three options for triggering - on, off and switching the state.

The advantage of smart scenarios is that they can be flexibly controlled - for example, by external sensors and controllers - or by other scenarios. The downside is working through the Xiaomi cloud. However, alternative options for managing the Xiaomi smart home ecosystem are available and rapidly developing, and I will certainly touch upon this topic in future reviews.

As for the task in question, it is most expedient to control the boiler by means of timers - setting the operating modes for weekdays and weekends. By experimentally determining how long the operation time is enough to provide the required amount of hot water.

As a result, the socket outlet fits my task of controlling and counting the energy consumption of the boiler. We are planning to consider either a couple more of these outlets or, if the price is good, a built-in Aqara outlet. As its standard price is twice as expensive as the option under consideration, it is not interesting yet.
