5G iPhone may be delayed

By  Philippine Bordignon 2020-01-07 1448 17

Recently, according to foreign media reports, investment research company Susquehanna (Heiner International) said in a research report that Apple will launch the first 5G iPhone for the first time in September this year. But this time the iPhone only supports a slower version of the 5G network, while a faster version of the 5G iPhone will not be available until December 2020 or January 2021.

"According to our investigation, the delay was due to Apple's decision to use its own packaged antenna (AiP) module rather than buying it from a third party," Susquehanna said in the report. The reason is that 5G networks have different types. For example, T-Mobile recently launched 600MHz's 5G network nationwide, but it is only slightly faster than 4G LTE. Another 5G technology, called "mmWave" (millimeter wave), is about 10 times faster than 4G LTE networks and is provided by T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon.

As a result, Apple is likely to release all the new iPhone, models at the same time at one event in September, but the iPhone that supports 5G mmWave is likely to be launched in the coming months. Just like Apple released iPhone 8 and iPhone X in September 2017, but only officially launched iPhone X in November.

Susquehanna also said that the slower 5G iPhone will be equipped with a LCD screen, while the mmWave iPhone will have a better OLED screen, just like today's iPhone 11 Pro screen. This means that iPhone 11 successors may only support slower but more extensive 5G networks, while higher-end iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max successors will support faster but smaller mmWave networks.

After the launch of the iPhone 11 series last year, Apple's current CEO Tim Cook said in an interview that after researching the market, Apple found that the entire market, both infrastructure and chips are not very mature, not enough to support the launch of a high-quality product, so the iPhone 11 series does not support 5G networks.
