Adobe's image editing and photo management tool Lightroom is now available through Apple's Mac App Store. Adobe offers there the new cloud-based "Photoshop Lightroom" in combination with cloud storage space of 1 T Byte, as a subscription billed via Apple. The app is intended to offer the full range of functions "for organizing, editing, storing and distributing" the recordings, as the manufacturer emphasizes, it apparently corresponds to the desktop version 2.3 released in May.
Lightroom subscription from Mac App Store can be cancelled monthly
The Lightroom subscription costs €10.50 per month on the Mac App Store, which is slightly less than the Lightroom single subscription sold directly by Adobe. The subscription starts automatically after a one-week free trial period. The Apple subscription can be cancelled on a monthly basis, but Adobe always requires an annual subscription for Lightroom instead. In the Mac App Store, Adobe seems to offer an optional annual subscription for 130 euros, which is less attractive than the monthly subscription.
Pro software to revive Mac App Store
Subscriptions and purchases in Apple's App stores are only possible via Apple's payment interface. Accordingly, the billing for a Lightroom subscription concluded there is done via Apple. The Mac manufacturer also earns a commission of 30 percent on subscriptions, which drops to 15 percent in the second subscription year. Whether this also applies to Adobe remains unclear.
Apple is trying to breathe new life into the long-neglected Mac App Store with major rebuilds after well-known developers retired from the store. Since the beginning of 2019, Microsoft has been offering its complete office suite there for the first time, also as a subscription billed via Apple. A loosening of the sandboxing requirements, which developers describe as frustrating, should also bring apps back to the store.
