Australian overclocker jordan.hyde99 set a new world record in wPrime 1024M with AMD Ryzen 9 3900X processor. What's amazing is the fact that the AMD processor was running at a much lower clock speed than the previous record-breaking Intel Core i9-7920X processor.

Ryzen 9 3900X

The Ryzen 9 3900X and Core i9-7920X processors are equipped with 12 processing cores and support 24 instruction streams each. Thus, in terms of the number of available cores and threads, both chips are in equal conditions. The first one is based on the AMD Zen 2 microarchitecture and operates on a 3.8 GHz base clock frequency, and in automatic overclocking can reach 4.6 GHz frequencies. The processor from the "blue" camp uses Intel Skylake microarchitecture and supports the 2.9 GHz and 4.4 GHz frequency formula, respectively. Detailed technical specifications of both devices are presented in the table.

Ryzen 9 3900X

The jordan.hyde99 overclocker overclocked the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X processor to a frequency of 5625 MHz using liquid nitrogen for cooling. The chip has completed the test run of wPrime 1024M in 35.517 seconds. The previous record-breaker of Intel Core i9-7920X showed the result of 35,693 s, being accelerated to 5955 MHz using the same liquid nitrogen.

Although AMD Ryzen 9 3900X outperformed the Core i9-7920X only marginally (less than one percent), the clock frequency is important here. The Ryzen 9 3900X has been able to compare to, and even surpass, the Core i9-7920X, by 5.8% less than its operating frequency. This indicates that the Zen 2 microarchitecture's performance per clock during workloads is noticeably higher than Skylake and subsequent microarchitectures based on the same design.
