Canon EOS 90D: Features and Prices of the New APS-C DSLR

By  Goraud Mazanec 2019-08-28 1219 0

Canon presents its new reflex, which was first seen last week following the mistaken publication of its complete technical data sheet. The EOS 90D is officially unveiled, with features and prices at stake. Close to the EOS 77D II in terms of format, the new Canon camera succeeds its 80D, which is just over three years old. The camera provides a welcome update to the APS-C sensor SLR.

Canon EOS 90D

The EOS 90D improves the characteristics of its older brother in many ways. Starting with its CMOS sensor, now 32.5 megapixels (compared to 24.2 MP), coupled with the latest generation DIGIC 8 image processor. The device, which remains compatible with the 80D's BG-E14 grip, retains its resistance to dust and moisture, and gains a few more joints in the process. Its overall ergonomics remain similar to the previous Nippon bodies, with a joystick, a slightly softer trigger and a larger upper display. The 90D has the advantage of remaining compact (140.7 x 104.8 x 76.8 x 8 mm) and not exceeding 701 grams. It includes a glass pentaprism viewfinder, but also a 3-inch swivel LCD monitor.

Eye AF in the spotlight

The speed of shooting is in the spotlight at the 90D, which is aimed at enthusiasts, sports or animal photography enthusiasts, and offers a burst of 10 images per second with AF tracking. For more reactivity, the SLR combines a first 1/8000 shutter and a silent electronic 1/16000 shutter. We also note the arrival, in video, of digital stabilization and 4K shooting at 30/25p. The Eye AF, previously available only in still shots, is now available in video. It should be noted that this option has also been added to the EOS R range via the firmware update deployed last week. Finally, it should be noted that this autofocus system with 45 collimators, 27 of which can be used at an aperture of f/8, is completed by an AI Focus system allowing the tracking of moving subjects in automatic mode. Finally, we retain an increasing autonomy, announced at 1300 views, against a little less than 1000 for the 80D, and 2h40 of shooting in 4K.

The EOS 90D will be available from September. It will cost 1299 euros for the box alone. A pack with 18-55 mm STM optics will be charged 1399 euros, while a second pack with 18-135 mm Nano USM optics will cost 1699 euros.
