FBI cracked iPhone with the help of a third party

By  Georges Mesnikoff 2020-01-16 862 26

A dispute over unlocking iPhone is escalating rapidly. Apple CEO Tim Cook is reportedly forming a team of experts to defend Apple's encryption policy in what will be a legal battle with the Justice Department. Cook is already privately assembling a team of senior advisers that will consider Apple's legal options to publicly allay concerns about its unwillingness to crack iPhone's built-in encryption technology, the New York Times said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Last week, the FBI asked Apple to unlock two phones belonging to the shooter at the naval airport in Pensacola, Florida, including an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 7Plus. Apple says it has helped to obtain data from mobile phones. Us Attorney General Bill Barr and US President Donald Trump both urged Apple to provide further technical support to crack the two iPhone, films for more information, but Apple refused, saying that doing so would threaten the safety of users.

FBI then said it worked with third-party companies such as Cellebrite and Grayshift to crack the phone and had access to the shooter's user data, including iCloud backups, account information and "transaction data" from multiple accounts related to the shooting.
