HTC Vive Cosmos VR headset: latest news about features and price

By  Fields Corrielus 2019-06-27 1444 0

Recently, HTC officials revealed more details about the Vive Cosmos VR, equipped with six cameras and improved resolution.

HTC Vive Cosmos

Announced at CES 2019, the HTC Vive Cosmos is a new VR helmet expected in the third quarter of 2019. While the aircraft is still shrouded in mystery, the manufacturer is now unveiling a new design updated from the non-functional version presented in January 2019.

On Vive's official Facebook page, HTC has just published a video in which the code name "D1230165" of the Cosmos is mentioned. However, the apparatus seen there is very different from that of the CES.

First of all, the facade now has six cameras instead of four: one up, the other down. This should make it possible to extend the tracking field. Indeed, one of the new features of the Cosmos compared to previous Vive helmets is the tracking system.

Just like the Oculus Quest or the Oculus Rift S, the Vive Cosmos is based on inside-out tracking. This means that tracking is not based on external sensors, but directly on the cameras located on the front. These will be responsible for tracking the movements of the controllers in order to transcribe them into the VR.

With six cameras instead of four, larger movements can be tracked. Controller tracking can continue when they are located under or above the helmet. It can also be seen that the facade is now perforated and removable.

According to HTC, this facade is a default "mod" that will be delivered with the Comos. It can therefore be inferred that it will be possible to opt for different modules with more functionalities.

Vive Cosmos: HTC promises a price below $900

Apart from these design changes, all the characteristics of the Vive Cosmos are still unknown. The definition, weight, field of view, specificities of the tracking system or even the price remain unknown. However, HTC promises to finally reveal all the secrets of its new jewel next week...

In parallel, the YouTube channel MRTV said it knows from reliable sources that Vive Cosmos will be sold for $900. However, HTC replied that this price was "incorrect and high". We can therefore expect a lower rate than the HTC Vive Pro offered in Europe for 879 euros....

In its video, still according to the same source, MRTV also announces a launch date for the Vive Cosmos for August 2019. HTC Vive has not commented on this second point, so it is possible that this launch date will be officially confirmed next week....
