Zhou Shengzi, president and chief financial officer of Xiaomi International, said in an interview with the media that Xiaomi insists on doing business in any country with a high degree of localization. In the Indian market, 90 per cent of Xiaomi's handsets are made locally and 95 per cent of its employees are women, helping to boost local female employment.
Adwait Mardikar, a research analyst at Canalys, said the long-term development prospects of smartphone suppliers locally will depend on the speed at which telecoms companies invest in 5G and manufacturing in India, as changes in import tariffs on parts will affect profitability, thereby affecting OEM's product portfolio and pricing. Meanwhile, Canalys expects the Indian smartphone market to grow by 8% to 160 million units by 2020.
