Intel Xe GPUs will Complete redesign for EU ISA instructions

The graphics card market is close to a major paradigm shift. NVIDIA currently dominates the market with little opposition from AMD, although RDNA points to ways. This situation could change in 2020, as Intel is planning to launch its first dedicated Xe graphics. According to Gitlab, the Gen 12 (Tiger Lake) would have a major update to the Intel EU ISA instructions introduced in the i965 processor.

Intel EU ISA are instructions for the execution units that are integrated in the current iGPU. This set of instructions has not been significantly modified since 2004. This is because the company has focused on iterative performance improvements and little else.

Major Changes to Intel EU ISA GPU Instructions

Raja Koduri has promised to double the power with each new generation of processors. Intel Xe require a major restructuring of the graphics architecture and technologies they integrate. To do this they have redesigned the EU ISA from the ground up, in order to optimize for the Xe GPUs.

"This merger request implements support for the ISA Gen12 (Tiger Lake) in the back-end of the i965 / Iris compiler.

It is planned that Gen12 will include one of the most detailed works of Intel EU ISA since the original i965. The encoding of almost all instruction fields, hardware operation code, and record type must be updated in this merge request," specifies Gitlab.

Tiger Lake (Gen12) will be the total renovation of Intel's graphics that will arrive in 2020 with a new I/O technology and a new Core architecture. This year in terms of processors, we have not seen anything relevant from Intel to date. It is expected that in 2020 we will see the first dedicated graphics and that these will be powerful.  In addition, Koduri has promised to double the power with each generation, starting with Tiger Lake.
