Mara Group, based in Rwanda, Africa, recently launched two smartphones, the Mara X and the Mara Z, which the company called the first "made in Africa" models and a testament to the country's ambitions to become a regional technology center.

It is reported that Mara X and Mara Z will use the Android operating system, which will cost about $190 and $130, respectively.

The Mara X and Mara Z will compete with Samsung, which sells its cheapest smartphones in Africa for $54, while miscellaneous phones cost about $37. Ashish Thakkar, chief executive of the Mara Group, says the company is targeting consumers who are willing to pay higher prices for the quality of their products.

"this is the first smartphone manufacturer in Africa," Thakkar said after accompanying Rwandan President Paul Kagame on a tour of the company.

Thakkar said it assembles smartphones in Egypt, Ethiopia, Algeria and South Africa, but imports parts.

"in fact, we are the first African company to engage in manufacturing. We are making motherboards throughout the production process. " Thakkar said. "each phone has more than 1000 parts."

The plant, which costs $24 million, can produce 1200 mobile phones a day, Thakkar said.

Paul Kagame said he hoped the phone would increase smartphone use in Rwanda, which currently uses about 15 per cent of smartphones.

"Rwandan people are already using smartphones, but we want more people to use smartphones. The introduction of Mara phones will enable more Rwandan people to have smartphones. " Paul Kagame said.
