This is OnePlus' first ever concept phone. In other words, it is the first time that the brand is presenting a product that serves primarily as a technological showcase and is not intended to be marketed. Technological showcase means technological prowess. So what is the one put forward by Concept One?
As mentioned, this smartphone has an "invisible camera". Indeed, it is the "first smartphone to use a glass (electrochromic glass) whose technology allows it to change color and make the rear camera invisible".
OnePlus further states that its device "revolutionizes CMF design (color, material, finish), offering radically new capabilities for future smartphones.
How is the camera hiding?
Pete Lau, the co-founder of the brand, made a comment to explain the motivations behind this OnePlus Concept One.
"The invisible camera presents itself as a new form of camera design, which spares the user the compromises of current camera arrangements. The lenses of the rear camera are hidden by the dynamic electrochromic glass and only become visible when the camera is in use."
It should be noted in passing that the OnePlus Concept One has four sensors on the back and that its back appears to be covered with orange leather.
Best picture quality
To promote its concept, OnePlus doesn't just use aesthetic arguments. Indeed, the brand claims that the lens used here is "lined with an integrated polarizing filter for the camera". The smartphone promises to produce sharper, more detailed pictures in brightly lit scenes."0.7 seconds to switch from opaque black to light black".
OnePlus is particularly proud to point out that the glass on the back of the Concept One needs "0.7 seconds to change from opaque black to clear black". This glass is also "exceptionally thin" and the challenge for the manufacturer's teams was to be able to refine the component to this point without weakening it.
The result is two glass panels of 0.1 mm each which, combined with a colour-changing material, reach a total thickness of only 0.35 mm. Finally, OnePlus recalls that it collaborated with McLaren on this project.
