Researchers develop artificial skin to make your smartphone feel good

By  Adan Flannigan 2019-10-22 148 0

Researchers have created an interaction between human artificial skin and smartphones, the fabric consists of silicone and imitates all possible skin properties without being alive. The research was developed by Telecom Paris and should be at least the most bizarre technological news you will see today.

The interface lets you control your smartphone and other devices it's connected to, such as smartwatches and notebooks. The design resembles that of a real skin that is frightening, and is available in two versions, a simple (frightening) and an ultra-realistic (even frightening). The interactions are varied, including stroking, pinching, punching and even tickling.

It acts as a kind of case for the smartphone, it fits on the back of the device and the result is something inconspicuous. According to the researchers, the study uses sensors and the human skin layer to explain how visual, tactile and kinaesthetic aspects of the largest organ in the human body can be reproduced.

The inventor explains that silicone was the ideal material and it is possible to get feedback on how people perceive the realism of recovery. From a gestural point of view, research can be helpful to show how the gestures performed can be transferred to other interfaces. It is also sensory important to show how our human skin reacts to touch.

For those who are motivated to create their own touch-sensitive human skin, the following video shows step by step what it takes to achieve this. First a thin silicon layer is created, then the electrode leads have to be sewn to a carrier plate. Finally, you need to create a thicker silicone layer, cut with a pen and solder each wire to a specific plate. See the research page for more details.
