UV Sense: The smallest wearable device in the world

A professor at Northwestern University has worked with global beauty company L'Oreal to develop the world's smallest wearable device. A thin feather light sensor can be placed on your fingernails to accurately measure the body's exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, which named as UV Sense.

The UV Sense is as light as raindrops, is powered by the sun and contains the most precise and accurate UV dosimeter in the world. It was showed at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Sunday, Jan. 7.

Small but useful

The UV Sense has no moving parts, no batteries, and waterproof, further more, it can be connected to almost any part of the body or clothing, continuously measuring ultraviolet rays in a unique cumulative mode.

Rogers said the device was created in partnership with L'Oreal to stick to the use of thumbnails-a stable, solid surface to ensure strong device adhesion. It is also the best place to measure exposure to the sun.

"it's a few orders of magnitude smaller than anything else," Rogers said. " "it is also one of the few sensors that directly measure the most harmful ultraviolet rays. In addition, it also records body temperature, which is also important in the context of sunlight. "

Usage of UV Sense

Users only need to download a app on their smartphone and then scan the phone on the device to see their exposure to the sun on the same day or for a period of time. The app can advise others to reduce the amount of time spent outdoors with strong ultraviolet rays or to reassure individuals who care about overexposure.

June K. Robinson, professor of dermatology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, said: "UV Sense is a transformative technology that allows people to receive real-time advice via text messages when the daily safe sun limit is exceeded."

"Sunshine is the most effective carcinogen," Rogers said. " "in addition to any other carcinogens known to humans, it has more carcinogenic factors, even in Chicago."

The harm of sun ultraviolet ray

On average, half of Americans experience one or more sunburns a year, and more than 1 million melanoma survivors in the United States alone, he said.

Guive Balooch, global vice president of L'Oreal Technology Incubator, said the company's research shows that overexposure to ultraviolet rays is a health and beauty concern for consumers around the world.

"with this knowledge, we began to create a product that combines problem-solving technology with people-oriented design to attract more consumers who need more information about their UV exposure," Balooch said. "whenever we develop new technologies, our goal is to make a huge global impact by enhancing the lives of consumers."

Rogers says, UV Sense's aesthetic design features are also important because they help break down barriers to adoption. The device can produce any color, any pattern, logo or brand.

Last year, Rogers' cutting-edge invention, the Microfluidic system on the skin, was selected for exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. As Northwestern University Rogers Labs continues to develop new products, Rogers believes that the technology developed by his team will have other applications that can help consumers better monitor their health.
