Huawei Honor 20S Hands-on Experience: Kirin 810 SoC and Special Back Cover

Huawei Honor 20S Hands-on Experience: Kirin 810 SoC and Special Back Cover

From now on, in Honor Series, there is one more professional called Honor 20S which excels in self-taking.

Earlier this year, on May 21, Honor held a launch event in London for its Honor 20 Series smartphones, including Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro.

A few months later, Honor has supplemented this series and brought the new Honor 20S to us.

Let’s have a look at this product before anyone else.

Honor 20S Main Specs & Configurations:

☞ 6.26-inch, 2340 x 1080P IPS LCD hole-punch display;

☞ HiSilicon Kirin 810 SoC;

☞ 48MP primary rear camera with f/1.8 aperture;

☞ 8MP ultra-wide-angle rear camera with f/2.4 aperture;

☞ 2MP macro lens with f/2.4 aperture;

☞ 32MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture, Quad Bayer filter;

☞ 3750mAh built-in battery, 10V 2A quick charge;

☞ 2-in-1 side-mounted capacitive fingerprint scanner & on/off button

6.26-inch Hole-punch Display and Special Back Cover

The front of Honor 20S is the same as that of the Honor 20, with a full-view display (hole-punch full screen). Seeing from the front of these two smartphones, you can’t distinguish them.

The diameter of the hole is equally small. The screen is better than previous punch-hole screens because it improves the integrity and reduces the impact of the hole size for better visual effect.

Not only both screens look alike, but their specs are the same.

More specifically, Honor 20S has a 6.26-inch LCD screen, with a resolution of 2340 x 1080P, 412PPI, TÜV Rheinland certified.

Of course, as far as the current technology is concerned, the in-screen fingerprint scanner for the LCD is not developed.

Therefore, Honor 20S still uses the side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Its unlocking speed and success rate are impeccable, better than the most smartphones which feature the in-screen fingerprint scanner now.

As for the tactile experience, Honor 20S measures 154.25x73.97x7.87mm, 172g. It is as big and light as Honor 20, which feels great in hand.

However, Honor 20S has a distinctive texture on the back cover, which looks like butterfly wings. According to the official statement, it is inspired by the colorist who has dreamy butterfly wings in the tropical rainforest.

In the light, the texture looks like a butterfly with wings open. It looks gorgeous. As for the colors, three colors were officially announced on the launch event, including white, black, and blue. You can choose among them according to your preference.

Kirin 810 SoC and Triple Rear Camera

In terms of self-taking, Honor 20S is equipped with a 32MP front camera, with f/2.0 aperture. It supports Quad Bayer filter for brighter images with improved sharpness in low light conditions. Additionally, it supports Face ID, AI Beauty Mode, etc. What’s worth mentioning is the improvements in self-taking.

In particular, 10 levels of Beauty Mode, and optimization to the lying silkworm, chin, submalar triangle, and more. Meanwhile, handheld night shot and image stabilization for the front camera are also added.

Compared with Honor 20, the rear camera setup of Honor 20S is inferior. As the former has quad-camera module, the latter uses a triple camera, without a depth sensor, i.e., primary camera + ultra-wide-angle lens + macro lens. More specifically, the primary camera is 48MP (f/1.8); the ultra-wide-angle lens is 8MP (f/2.4), and the macro lens is 2MP.

When it comes to the chipset, Honor 20S is powered by the same Kirin 810 SoC as Honor 9X Pro. The CPU incorporates two Cortex A76 @2.27GHz high-performance cores and six Cortex A55 @1.88GHz low-power cores. The GPU is Mali-G52, with six arithmetic units. Regarding the AI, Kirin 810 is the first to use Da Vinci architecture NPU developed by Huawei. Theoretically, it outperforms the flagship chipset, Kirin 980.

According to Geekbench 4, the single-core performance exceeds 2,700 points, higher than the that of Qualcomm’ s sub-flagship, Snapdragon 845 SoC, and the new mid-range chipsets, including Snapdragon 730, 730G. Its multi-core performance is close to 8,000 points; meanwhile, the GPU performance is higher than Snapdragon 730 but lower than Snapdragon 845.

Of course, the overall performance of Kirin 810 is not as good as Kirin 980. However, as a brand new mid-range flagship, Honor 20S runs most Apps and popular mobile games smoothly. You can be assured of it.

3750mAh Battery and 20W Quick Charge

Honor 20S still uses a 3750mAh battery and supports 20W quick charge (10V 2A). As for the actual battery life, we haven’t tested it, so we just set it aside.

All in all, the upside of Honor 20S is exceptional camera performance. Apart from that, thanks to the Kirin 810 SoC, it is competitive among products at similar prices.

It is a pity that Honor 20S doesn’t come with NFC, which is somewhat inconvenient for those we often use public transportation.

Honor 20S will be available in 2 versions, 6GB+128GB and 8GB+128GB. You can choose whether to buy Honor 20 or 20S according to your needs. If you like taking photos or use phones to air live broadcast, Honor 20S will be the best choice for you.
