Qualcomm Launched Snapdragon 865 SoC. Xiaomi and OPPO Will Be the First to Use It Next Year

At the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit, there are many keywords showed on the screen, such as 5G, AI, and games. Finally, Snapdragon is underlined.

According to the words of Cristiano Amon, who is the president of Qualcomm Incorporated, 5G will be a new chance for Qualcomm and the industry. Innovative Snapdragon 5G platform will force the industry to realize the vision of large-scale deployment of 5G in 2020.

On the first day of Snapdragon Tech Summit, Qualcomm officially launched Snapdragon 865, which is the next-generation flagship chip after Snapdragon 855, 855+, and brand new 700-series chip Snapdragon 765/765G.

Regarding the 5G modem, they use different resolutions. Snapdragon 865 still uses a separate 5G modem. With Qualcomm X55 5G modem, it supports for both SA and NSA (dual-mode 5G). This will enable a camera with resolutions up to 20MP, a recording rate of 8K/30fps, and 15 TOPS AI computing power.

Qualcomm believed that this is the most advanced 5G chip platform to support 5G international coverage.

What's more, Snapdragon 765/765G has integrated X52 5G modem and supports 5G dual-mode, millimeter-wave, and Sub-6. The download speeds are up to 3.7Gbps. It is also the first Snapdragon chip embedded with a 5G modem.

Qualcomm also announced the latest version of the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, the 3D Sonic Max. It offers a recognition area that is 17 times larger than the previous generation and a simultaneous two-finger authentication. 3D Sonic Max is more secure, faster, and easier to use than the previous generation.

Xiaomi Mi 10 will be the first phone using Snapdragon 865

Lin Bin, vice president of Xiaomi, and Wu Qiang, vice president of OPPO, showed up successively on the first day of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019.

These two manufacturers are expected to launch flagship smartphones with Snapdragon 865 SoCs in the first quarter of 2020.

Meanwhile, Motorola and Nokia HMD believe that Snapdragon 5G modular platforms of Qualcomm will simplify the terminal development process significantly.

The full technical parameters and design details of two chips will be showed tomorrow.

However, Qualcomm doesn't have a great advantage at the beginning of the 5G chip. Over the past few months, problems such as a non-integrated modem and non-dual mode have troubled VIVO and Xiaomi 5G phones, which are the first to use Snapdragon 855 with a separate 5G modem.

More than that, after Huawei and HONOR, offered compatible products supporting dual-mode 5G and chips integrated with 5G modem, 5G phones powered by Qualcomm chipsets hardly benefit from the marketing.

Time flies. Even at the beginning of 5G, there will be an essential effect on phone manufacturers' decisions.

In the Earnings Conference Call in August, the CEO of Qualcomm, Steve Mollenkopf, confirmed that their earnings and revenue were indirectly influenced. Because Huawei has made significant progress in the Chinese smartphone market, many customers, such as Xiaomi, canceled orders of 4G phones.

The recent trend is that some manufacturers who have already launched 5G chips still compete with Qualcomm for customers.

A week ago, MediaTek released the first 5G Soc named "Dimensity 1000," which adopts ARM's new Cortex-A77 CPU architecture and supports dual-mode 5G. We also reviewed that the new 5G chip of MediaMTK that seems like a counterattack because its specifications are competitive.

Besides, Vivo, which has launched some 5G phones, collaborates with Samsung to jointly develop a chip, Exynos 980. Exynos 980 will also integrate a 5G modem, support dual-mode 5G, and adopt ARM A77 architecture.

Qualcomm indicated that many manufacturers, such as Blackshark, Coolpad, Lenovo, Meizu, Nubia, OnePlus, Realme, Redmi, Smartisan, TCL, Vivo, ZTE and 8848 planed to use new Snapdragon 5G chip in 5G phones launched in 2020 or later.

Apple also chose to compromise with Qualcomm this April. They have reached a license agreement on a global patent for up to 8 years and a related agreement on chipset supply, which means the iPhone will use Qualcomm 5G chips in the next few years.

In the upcoming 5G era, will Qualcomm still power most Android phones as usual, or face a new round of the competition? This is not only associated with the business of Qualcomm chipsets but also the future of the smartphone industry.
