ASUS ROG Phone 2 Vs. ASUS ROG Phone: Should You Upgrade To The New King Of Gaming Smartphones?

These days, it is not much of a challenge to find a phone that’s so powerful designed to run most games.

Before now, gaming phones were mostly unheard of in the smartphone circle.

Though, most phones used then are capable of running some gaming apps, only to an extent. Gaming-oriented phones have their peculiar properties. As most of the available phones then were lacking in these peculiar properties, the limitation for gaming in these phones was there as well.

The ASUS ROG Series

One of the foremost devices to break away from the trend and blaze a new trail in gaming smartphones is the Asus ROG. All the accessories put in place in the design of the ASUS ROG were all made not just for the most conventional smartphone designs, but a big flair of gaming.

The All-New ROG 2

The new ROG Phone 2, if not for anything, is a reiteration by the ASUS Group on its commitment towards providing the best gaming smartphones in the ASUS ROG series. The ROG 2, though, has a big similarity to its predecessor, the ASUS ROG; however, it is a step up to its predecessor. The hardware installed in the latest ROG it’s a class of its own.

The all-new processor, a Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, which is made to be much faster and very efficient during gaming results to a more seamless switch between different apps and games, with no slowdown. The ROG 2 speedy UFS 3.0 storage, 12GB of RAM, and world-first 120Hz AMOLED that the phone has to offer makes it a perfect gaming phone for all.

Below are the similarities between the ROG 2 and the ROG they distinction.

Design

The design of both phones looks closely similar. The October 2018 release ASUS ROG has a front Gorilla glass six and a back Gorilla Glass 5 and an aluminum frame; this is similar to the ROG 2.

Though the ROG phone is not to be described as flat, the ROG 2 is no better as it weighs 240g to the ROG’s 200g. The new ROG Phone 2 with 9.5mm against the initial 8.3mm is quite taller and thicker.

Where the ROG phone is comfortable with only the black color, the new ROG model offers a glowy Matte Black and Glossy Black color.

Another visible distinction between the two ASUSU ROG smartphones lies in the fingerprint scanner. The ASUS ROG 2 fingerprint scanner is built under the display, rather at the rear, as it is related to the ROG phone. If you’re among the school of thought that believes the ROG’s diamond-shaped back scanner a little of a put-off, then you may fall in love with the ROG 2.

One major obstacle, linked to in-display scanners is its slight sluggishness compared to the rear scanners. This has made the screen fingerprint scanner to be less reliable.

Display

In terms of display, the outgoing ROG 6.0 inches AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors is similar to the new ROG 2 except the ROG 2’s 6.59 inches display size to its predecessor’s 6.0 inches and four USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports.

Still, on the size, the new ROG beats its old counterpart in the screen to body ratio, boasting of approximately 80.3% screen-to-body ratio to the old ROG’s 76.8% screen-to-body ratio. The resolution of the ROD 2 to the ROG phone stands at 1080 x 2340 pixels to 1080 x 2160 pixels.

Camera

Truth be told, gaming phones do not make for a great camera phone. This is more exemplified in the old ROG phone. The old ROG phone offered a 12Mp/8Mp dual rear camera with 12mm ultrawide, an LED flash, panorama, and HDR. The ROG’s 8Mp selfie lens is way short of being terrific.

However, the current ROG Phone 2 makes a giant stride improvement on these, with a 48Mp/13Mp rear setup of 26mm wide, 11mm ultrawide, and well-known features like LED flash, HDR, and panorama. The 24Mp selfie lens of the new ROG is perfect for any gaming phone.

Performance

The ROG Phone 2 comes with an upgrade of 12GB RAM from the 8GB in the original ROG phone. Although the base storage is relatively the same, however, the new ROG Phone 2 goes as far as having a 1TB version, which is not in the old ROG.

Also, where the ROG 2 phone boasts of a Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 plus 2.96GHz, Octa-core processor, and an Adreno 640 GPU, the old ROG models, only offered a Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845, with Adreno 630 GPU. The bigger RAM of the ROG 2, coupled with its faster designed new processor, permits for the much-improved performance.

Other Specifications

Also on display, the initial ROG phone with its 6in, 1080p, 90Hz AMOLED, and 1ms response time is nowhere close to the ROG 2 6.59in, 120Hz refresh rate, and 49ms touch latency. Although AirTriggers are available on both phones, the ROG 2 phone AirTrigger is more advanced and comes very handy in gaming in the landscape.

The battery of the new ROG 2 is a monster, a non-removable Li-Po 6000 mAh battery, with a 30W quick charging ability. The first ASUS ROG version provided a non-removable Li-Ion 4000 mAh battery.

Price

The ASUS ROG 2 is offered at a fitting price of $949.99, against the initial ROG with a price tag of $489.99.

Should I Upgrade To ASUS ROG Phone 2?

If you are a fan of gaming phones, upgrading to the ASUS ROG 2 is certainly what you don’t have to wait till you’re pushed to doing. The new ROG phone makes for a perfect gaming game around, with the best accessories and novel tech features to give you a lot of power and best gaming experience. So what are you waiting for?

Bottom Line

The ASUS ROG phones have grown to be one of the best gaming phones in the world. Though, its major turn off might be in its poor camera quality and unreliable optic fingerprint scanner, which is common with most phones with a fingerprint scanner built in the screen.

However, the ROG 2 phone has gone beyond been just the gamers’ top choice. Anyone can still take advantage of its high-end performance and other capable specs. Pick an ASUS ROG 2 phone today!
