Xiaomi Mi 9: Some Thoughts And Opinions

Xiaomi Mi 9: Some Thoughts And Opinions

Xiaomi Mi 9 has been the “it” phone that everybody talks about in the past several months. With its top-notch processor, sharp-looking curved screen and nice triple cameras.

Xiaomi has always been the leading brand that provides abundant choices at surprisingly low range prices.

Then why Mi 9? What makes it stand out among all the other not just Xiaomi phones, but also magnificent phones from other brands?

We are going to get into details, for the reasons, the rationales, of exactly why Mi 9 has become the phone nobody can simply ignore.

Overall Design

On a whole, Mi 9 is very sleek and curvy combined with a clean quality and elegant yet sturdy feel, thanks to the Gorilla Glass 6 screen and Gorilla Glass 5 om the rear of the phone.

Details such as the slightly curved rear panel ensure immense comfort during a long period of use. The large 6.4 inch AMOLED teardrop notch display combined with a 2340 x 1080 Full HD truly delivers beautiful, clean sharp images; ensuring the color vibrancy is not lost or disturbed.

At the bottom, Type-C fast charging, “standard” but necessary touch Xiaomi incorporated in Mi 9.

It’s not the first smartphone without a 3.5mm headphone jack, in fact, quite the protocol in the smartphone industry already. But it still bums me out. And to all the fellow headphone jack lovers like me out there, I have to say: We have to let it go, that ship has sailed.

I do appreciate the Google Assistant button on the left side of the device, a power and volume rocker button to the right. However, at times, these buttons were accidentally pressed while putting it down on the side, which I personally feel annoying after a few times.

Being said that, with the large display of the phone, for some people it can be hard to reach the top of the phone by using a single hand.

However, the fingerprint sensor and the side buttons are low on the side, thus, making it easily accessible. With the glass body, I feel that the device is slipping away from my hand.

Mi 9 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, released in the 4th quarter of 2018, which made it the latest chip from Qualcomm.

6GB of RAM might sound just a bit below the average or mediocre with all the 12GB RAM coming out to the market. But from what I tested and experienced, 6GB is more than strong and efficient enough to support any intense phone users, gamers for that matter.

The performance of the device is good, even when I am playing demanding games like PUBG Mobile and Fortnite. However, the only thing that I notice while playing these games – is that the device is getting a bit warm. The longer I play, it gets more and more heate.

Being said that, the overheating of the device does not have any negative impact on the performance of the device.

On the note of gaming experience, Mi 9 with it’s AMOLED display provides vivid image which is a big pro, but the lack of dual speakers and how it could impact user experience is noticeable.

The sound quality is good, but not perfect, with the show of sign that when I turn the volume up to the maximum, I can detect some noise.

Battery, aside from all other crucial factors that constitute a good smartphone, is what matters to me the most. Spec wise, it’s a 3,300mAh battery.

I am an extensive phone user, with different social media accounts, watching YouTube videos for some time and playing games like PUBG, the phone more or less lasts for an entire day within a single charge.

I test the battery by watching a 90-minute movie with full brightness. The battery performs well and only drops to 85%.

Yes, the battery test result turned out quite satisfying for what it is, but I am still concerned about exactly what a 3,300mAh battery can hold and perform a year from now, for a phone with a gigantic high-resolution screen, up-to-date OS, and a processor that’s Snapdragon 855.

It takes about 90 to 100 minutes to completely charge the battery through wireless charging (not included in the box, disappointing), and 50 minutes to sockets, which is quite impressing.

Overall, as I mentioned earlier, the battery is so far sufficient enough for a user like me, but I have my reservations and concerns for real.

The camera is one of the strongest USP of Xiaomi Mi 9. It comes with a triple lens camera setup that consists of 48MP wide-angle camera with an aperture of f/1.75, 16 MP ultra-wide lens, and 12 MP telephoto lens.

With all these combined, and you can certainly take amazing photos on your smartphone. In addition to this, it also comes with a 20 MP front camera in the teardrop notch. Images taken from the phone look absolutely wonderful with vibrant colors.

However, I feel that the images taken in low light were not up to the mark. It could have been better in my opinion. Though the night mode tends to make up a little bit for that. With updates coming in the future, I would like to see improvements in low light image quality.

You can even shoot 4K UHD videos with the rear camera. The quality of the video is good and supports image stabilization. Again, the phone gets hotter as you prolong the video recording, but that does not have an impact on the performance.

Final Thoughts

I’ve always been a skeptic, and a lot of times, popularity promotes over-hyping. Through my share of time with Mi 9, if I am being completely honest, it’s not worth to be put on a pedestal, but it lives up to the name and the “fame”.
