DJI Mavic Mini FPV Drone In-depth Review: with Only 249 grams for Only $399

DJI Mavic Mini FPV drone is the latest product of the Mavic Series, which was officially released on October 30, 2019.

This drone is designed for beginners, amateurs, and enthusiasts. It's ultralight since it weighs only 249 grams.

The Everyday Cam version, which comes with a remote controller, is currently sold for $399 on the official website; the Fly More Combo version is sold for only $499! This price is particularly competitive. Our review was based on the Fly More Combo version.

In addition to the price tag of DJI Mavic Mini drone, this product has many other strong selling points. First of all, it's a drone launched by DJI.

As we all know, DJI has been working in this field for many years, and it has acquired a lot of technical experience, which is necessary for producing an excellent product. Therefore, we should bear in mind that this product is an innovative version, not a "simplified version" of the Mavic series.

DJI Mavic Mini top features:

 1. 249 grams of body weight, including batteries and memory cards, you can't use this device without previous registration (However, you shouldn't use it in no-fly zones).
2. The size of the drone is relatively small, so it's easy to carry.
3. Maximum battery life is estimated for up to 30 minutes, enough to shoot many videos and pics.
4. Automatic return flight system in case of LOS (no signal).
5. 12 million pixels, 1 / 2.3 inch CMOS sensor.
6. 2.7K 30P and FHD 60P video shooting.
7. New DJI Fly APP.
8. Many accessories are optional, including the DIY creative kit, mini backpack, charging base, snap adapter, propeller holder, which are practical and cool.
9. Fly More Combo version is particularly convenient due to its Two-way charging hub and propeller guard are quite useful.

Overall, these are the core selling points of DJI Mavic Mini FPV drone.

Of course, this brief introduction is not comprehensive enough, because this product has a lot of technical features which we will describe later on.

Before that, we still have to talk about the price. Everyday Cam version includes both the DJI drone and its remote controller.

Additionally, the Fly More Combo version has a Two-way charging hub and pair of 360-degree propeller guards. These two price options are quite unusual for DJI. However, both are very competitive in comparison to other brands and models.

01 Mavic Mini Appearance: 249 grams of palm-sized drone

DJI Mavic Series Size Comparison

The appearance of the DJI Mavic Mini FPV Drone itself is one of the core selling points. As we mentioned before, the Mavic Mini has only about 249 grams. This means that it's the lightest and most portable drone among DJI models. You can even carry it in a pocket.

The whole fuselage is folded up only to the palm.

DJI Mavic Mini FPV Drone size comparison

Through the two pictures above, we can see the size comparison of the three drones of the DJI Mavic series. The two products from left to right (bottom to top) are Mavic 2, Mavic Air, and Mavic Mini.

If you look at these two pictures, you can see how small the size of the Mavic Mini is in comparison to other models.

It includes a drone, a remote control, a two-way charging hub, three batteries, two propeller guards, a power adapter, two charging lines, three remote controller cables (with lightning port, micro USB port, USB Type-C port), spare propellers, a warranty card, a user manual, etc.

No matter the small size of DJI Mavic Mini FPV Drone, it's made of resistant and robust materials. After folding, the volume of a product has the size of a hand, which is impressive.

DJI Mavic Mini is the smallest drone by DJI. Its volume is similar to OsmoPocket. In the shooting part, the DJI Mavic Mini's camera uses a 12-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor design that enables 2.7K 30P and FHD 60P video capture, as well as 12-megapixel photos.

Remote controller details

Next, let's take a look at the details of this remote, which is present in the Everyday Cam version too.

The folded remote control is small, as well.

Rocker can be removed and hidden here.

The remote controller is easy to use and user-friendly; you can learn how to use it in a few steps. The remote controller can connect to the mobile phone and the drone via Wi-Fi, enabling image transmission up to 4km of distance.

When connecting to a mobile phone, the transmission between the remote controller and the mobile phone needs to be done through a special cable.

Three cables are available, namely, Apple cable, Android Micro-USB interface, and Android Type-C cable. Besides, a detachable control stick can be easily stored inside the remote controller.

Two-way charging hub and propeller holder details

Finally, let's take a look at the details of the Two-way charging hub and the propeller holder.

Two-way charging hub and three batteries

Two-way charging hub interface

In this case, DJI upgraded the original charging set to a Two-way charging hub, which can hold three batteries for charging, making charging more convenient. When your mobile phone needs to be charged, you can use it as a power bank to recharge your mobile phone.

360-degree propeller guard

This propeller guard protects all the propellers of DJI Mavic Mini, so you don't have to worry about any damage. The propeller guard is particularly light. Its weight will not affect the endurance of the drone.

02 New DJI Fly APP

DJI released a new DJI Fly APP, which is mainly used to control DJI Mavic Mini, but you will be able to use it for other DJI products in the future as well.

There are many changes which we will introduce to you now. But don't worry, it has a Flight Tutorial which will help you to learn how to use it.

Note: Here’s a screenshot of the office area (administrative area) in Beijing, which is in the no-fly zone, so there will be a no-fly reminder.

New feature: Popular places near you for aerial photography

DJI Fly APP will tell you which areas are no-fly zones and which areas around you are the most popular locations for aerial shooting, so beginners do not need to explore by themselves.

Follow the steps to connect the DJI drone with your mobile phone

Follow the steps, you can connect your drone with your mobile phone.

Start initialization after connection.

After the operation, you can see the real-time picture.

After connecting the mobile phone to the drone, you will have to pass a few initial steps, including whether to purchase the after-sales service of DJI CARE. Afterward, flight safety data will be updated. After the update, you can click the “GO FLY” button to enter the real-time display interface.

Takeoff button for beginners

Many newbies don't know how to start flying a drone. In the App, there is a take-off button which you can click to see the interface of the picture above. Press and hold the big button to take off, and the drone will start to take off.

Settings in the DJI Fly APP

As you can see the settings of DJI Fly APP in the picture above, there are many options to adjust, from the height, distance limits, joysticks, to the shooting settings, and the connection settings. Moreover, some parameters can be changed on the main menu.

Options on the video recording interface

Creator Templates

In the video recording interface, you can see all video specifications and options. A new feature has been added to the DJI App, a function that can generate awesome videos and modes: Dronie, Circle, Helix, Rocket, etc.

Just use the corresponding function, and then Mavic Mini will automatically generate a short video clip and return to the starting position.

The introduction to the APP has come to an end. Overall, this new app adds functionality, which is necessary for beginners like me. The real-time image display is larger, and users can see more clearly. Besides, the APP interface is simple and easy to use.

03 aerial photography experience: beginners can quickly get the hang of it

Next, I would like to share with you my experience of using a DJI Mavic Mini FPV Drone.

My first impression was that this drone is really light and too convenient to carry wherever you go. I tested DJI Mavic Mini in late autumn in Beijing suburbs. I don't regret it because Beijing, in this period, is unusually colorful, especially from the bird’s-eye view.

Be sure to take off according to the tips of the APP and avoid the no-fly zone.

Let me first show you a video I recorded when I was in one of the famous shooting locations recommended by DJI Fly APP.

Since Beijing doesn’t have so many locations for aerial photography, I suggest you follow the advice of DJI Fly APP to avoid any troubles. DJI Fly APP can access to SkyPixel, a social media platform for users to share their photos and videos.

Taking the aerial footage in this video was the second time I used a drone. The first time I used a Mavic Mini drone was on Hainan island. I am still inexpert, but I am proficient in controlling drones because I can shoot aerial videos with decent results.

Real photo shots by DJI Mavic Mini FPV Drone

If we talk about image quality, it's fine for beginners like me. 2.7K HD videos are enough good to create very good drone shootings or group photos during family trips.

In terms of photos, Mavic Mini supports 12MP pictures of the same size as the iPhone, and you can share it with your friends. After all, this view is beyond the reach of many other devices, so you are still above the average. A 3-axis motorized gimbal will ensure stability and ultra-smooth footage.

The remote controller of DJI Mavic Mini FPV Drone

When it comes to remote control, I could easily hold it, and it feels comfortable. The weight is mostly related to the mobile phone. The remote control itself was super light.

The left rocker controls the rotation of the drone, and the right rocker controls the horizontal movement. Buttons for adjusting the camera's pitch angle, taking pictures and recording videos are on the top side of the remote control, as described earlier.

If you want to match the camera angle, move your joystick to the left/right. Of course, I have to create my shooting according to the images and scenes I want to show.

I’ve been able to capture different photos, while at the same time capturing a dynamic angle of the same area.

DJI Mavic Mini aerial photography drone can be controlled by remote control for up to 4 kilometers. From my own experience, the interference from the surrounding environment is pretty high.

For instance, I went to a national park where there are many high-voltage cables and signal towers around, so the interference was common. With such high-intensity interference, I tried to fly 95 meters high and 500 meters away and lost signals of the drone.

If you lose the connection, don't panic, because DJI drones have an automatic return to home function. Even in the extreme case that you don’t have enough power or connection, Mavic Mini can still automatically return to the takeoff point, so I was quietly waiting.

The drone can return without any orders. However, if you get closer to the drone, you can reconnect to the Mavic Mini. You can choose to turn off automatic mode in the APP, continue manual control, or let the drone automatically complete the landing operation.

04 Conclusion: DJI Mavic Mini is worth buying

Since the release of the DJI Mavic Mini aerial camera, I recommended it to many friends. The feedback that I’ve got is so far positive, especially when we talk about the price.

As I’ve mentioned before, Everyday Cam version is cheaper, while the Fly More Combo version (all official accessories included) is more expensive but still affordable for most people.

DJI Mavic Mini is worth buying because of the following three reasons:

First, this drone was launched by DJI, which includes a high level of aerial photography and stability.

Not to mention the stability of the drone, although this drone is ultra-light, I’ve used it on level 5-6 gales of wind, it was still stable enough to shoot videos! There’s nothing more left to say about DJI stability, you can check it by yourself.

Second, I could use it without significant difficulties. I believe that most of the aerial photography drones are designed to be easy to handle. What beginners are usually most afraid of is the lack of experience.

My suggestion is, take it easy, don’t exaggerate with sharp moves; you shouldn’t have any complications while using Mavic Mini.

Third, all functions are impressive. Beginners would not care about the same features as professional drone users. Therefore, DJI has launched a new DJI Fly APP, which allows users to have easier operations, while also being able to view more shocking images.

Besides, APP's unique aerial photography point and Creator Templates are the most useful functions for beginners. According to DJI, these new features have been added thanks to previous feedback.

Finally, DJI Mavic Mini aerial photography drone, from my point of view, is ideal for users like amateur drone users, digital product enthusiasts, etc.

As for professional aerial photographers, it is recommended to buy the Mavic 2 Pro version. In regards to Mavic Mini, I don’t regret the money I’ve spent to buy it. If you are interested in drones, I believe you should give a change to this product.
