Teclast X4 Hands-On Review

Teclast X4 Hands-On Review

Hands-on with the new Teclast X4 an 8GB RAM + Celeron N4100 Windows 10 tablet with a decent type-cover style keyboard and fully laminated keyboard. This new 11.6″ tablet from Teclast is decent and a very good Surface Go alternative with an easy access hatch under the kickstand to upgrade the SSD. A great move I want to see even premium tablets with this,

The slot itself surprises with all 2242, 2260 and 2280 sizes possible. Just make sure it’s an M.2 SATA3 spec drive and not NVMe and you’ll be fine.

So even though this was just my unboxing and first look it’s pretty much a full review of it as I’ve discovered all the ins and outs to it. Only a few things are missing, battery life exact figure and thermals. Thermals I can report are fine, it’s clearly using copper in there to cool the N4100 Gemini Lake SoC and possible thermal pads. Teclast has gone with the default 6W TDP probably for the best battery life Vs performance compromise. And it runs smooth and as expected for a Celeron N4100 with 8GB of RAM in dual channel.

Battery Life

As for battery life, about 5-6 hours as stated in my video above is a fair good estimate. Depending on screen brightness and use. The 26.6Wh battery falls well short of the 37Wh battery we typically see in the Gemini Lake laptops. With only an 11.6″ screen and the SSD slot, they didn’t have a lot of space to work with.

The Teclast X4 does support Type-C PD charging tested and working as well as my external PD battery pack. The overall build of the tablet is great very good and the type-cover the keycaps have a nice rubberised matte finish with good key feedback. No missing keystrokes or issues.

Pros & Cons

The only cons are the touchpad is small (As expected), the battery life isn’t amazing (as expected) the right USB 3.0 port doesn’t seem to like large external spindle hard drivers. It will either not work or cut out and then work at USB 2.0 speeds. Flash drives work at USB 3.0 speeds so it’s having some power issues on the battery. The left port works fine on my unit.

And yes, super weak speakers. Front facing is good to see but they sound so flat and lack volume. Using software to boost their loudness helps but won’t fix their bass output which is zero almost. Oh and the stylus, not a pressure sensitive one. I will not be getting it.

Otherwise, the performance is as expected, completely unlocked bios and it has top build, very solid well put together and the type-cover I really nice it. This is one of the better Windows 10 tablets to come out of China.
