Is Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro the Current King of Cost-effective?

Is Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro the Current King of Cost-effective?

Although Redmi K20 has been released earlier, when I receive Redmi Note 8 Pro, I recall the truly hot-selling Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro after Redmi’s independence from Xiaomi.

Redmi Note 8 Pro offers the best tactile experience among mid-range smartphones, in comparison with Vivo Z5, OPPO K3, MEIZU 16Xs, and many other mid-range smartphones. The curves of the glass back cover perfectly fit the middle frame and screen. It appears as a whole, as aesthetic and luxurious as an amber.

It feels better in hand than previous Redmi smartphones. We might conclude the self-evolution of Redmi.

Nevertheless, although Redmi Note 8 Pro is exquisite, it doesn’t mean that you can operate it easily with a single hand because of the 6.53-inch large display.

There are two defects of the 6.53-inch display:
The material is LCD instead of OLED
It is a teardrop notch display, not a true full-screen one

The main reason why Redmi uses LCD is that it needs to reduce the cost, like another mid-range smartphone, Honor 9X.

We witness the fierce competition of mid-range smartphones from the beginning of this year. Mobile phone manufacturers are maximizing the competitiveness of their products, while the full cost is transparent.

Using the LCD display and rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is a great strategy.

Although the bezel on the bottom is broader than that of Redmi K20 Pro, it is acceptable, not hard to the eye.

Redmi Note 8 Series uses the same fingerprint sensor as Note 7 Series. However, the quad-camera of Note 8 Pro is aligned in the center, which seems skillful, more delicate than Note 7 Series.

Redmi Note 8 Pro features the quad-camera module with Samsung GW1 64MP CMOS sensor as the primary camera. It means that by using Redmi Note 8 Pro, you can get 64MP photos directly.

In comparison with the 48MP IMX586 sensor of K20 Pro, Redmi Note 8 Pro excels in a higher resolution. Due to the limit of file size, I didn’t upload a 64MP photo.

Although 64MP photos don’t mean a lot for those who seldom take pictures with their phones and never do post-production, for mobile photography enthusiasts, 64MP makes a big difference.

A 64MP photo allows for more possibilities in post-production as you can have the same tolerance as RAW pictures. Because of the high-resolution, the details won’t be unclear after cropping.

When it comes to the camera performance in normal mode, Redmi Note 8 Pro can be improved. Nevertheless, I benefit a lot from the 2MP macro lens and 2MP depth sensor for capturing the scenery and realizing the bokeh effect.

The only downside is that Note 8 Pro doesn’t produce colors as vibrant as K20 Pro. Moreover, the problems of partial over-exposure and under-exposure might occur.

The performance of Redmi Note 8 Pro in the Night Shot mode satisfies me a lot because I can get a clean photo with ideal exposure and sufficient brightness. However, I need to wait a bit longer, which might result from the chipset.

Here are some photos that I’ve taken by using Redmi Note 8 Pro:

MTK Helio G906T SoC powers Redmi Note 8 Pro. According to the ads, Helio G906T is born for gaming. In terms of parameters, the CPU is a 12nm process chip with two A76 cores and six A55 cores, 2.05GHz primary frequency, Mali G76 MC4 800MHz GPU.

According to Geekbench, MTK Helio G906T outperforms Snapdragon 730, with 10% higher single-core performance, 30% higher multi-core performance. The performance of Redmi Note 8 Pro suffices daily use.

I carried out a test of the gaming performance of Redmi Note 8 Pro. In the beginning, its performance was powerful, as it could maintain the same frame rate as some flagships.

Later, the 12nm process chip generated heat, which was a little scorching for the hand. After playing for about 1 hour, the image of Redmi Note 8 Pro frozen obviously, and the fps was lower. The two A76 cores @2.05GHz also lagged.

However, since I haven’t tested the SoC with Snapdragon 730/730G side by side, you’d better wait till the detailed results come out.

The Helio G90T supports MediaTek HyperEngine and MI Game Turbo 2.0 to optimize the gaming experience from the hardware and software, respectively. What’s more, it is certain that Note 8 Pro will support Black Shark gamepad later, which might attract mobile gamers.

Of course, if you don’t care too much about the hardware, including Helio G90T, quad camera, 64MP, Redmi Note 8 Pro is still the right choice for you, because of:

1. 18W quick charge

The advantage of the 18W quick charge is that Redmi Note 8 Pro supports both QC, PD, and MTK PE standard. In other words, any power adapter enables you to enjoy the 18W quick charge. Isn’t it amazing?

The battery capacity is 4500mAh. According to the official statement, it offers Smart Power-saving Mode, Sleep Mode 2.0, over two days of battery life. Indeed, Redmi Note 8 Pro is long-lasting enough, partly because of the MTK Helio G90T SoC.

2. NFC function

So far, Redmi Note 8 Pro is the only smartphone under 2000 yuan (about $279) which supports NFC. With Mi Pay, it can be used as a transit card, bank card, access card.

3. IR blaster and 3.5mm headphone jack

Like its predecessors, Redmi Note 8 Pro incorporates an IR blaster and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

I’ve talked about nearly everything about the smartphone. How about my conclusion?

As I’ve mentioned earlier, Redmi Note 8 Pro is the most exquisite mid-range phone that I have used. It is perhaps the most surprising Xiaomi/Redmi smartphone in terms of the design.

Its exquisiteness leaves a good impression on my mind. The quick charge, long battery life, NFC, IR blaster, MIUI, and the brand itself are undoubtedly the plus.

As for the LCD, 64MP camera, MTK Helio G90T, as well as pricing, Redmi’s strategy is a bit controversial. However, users only need to choose whether to accept them or not. I understand the extraordinary solution that Note 8 Pro offers.

OMG! I am obsessed with Redmi Note 8 Pro which costs under $200!
