Redmi K30 5G Hands-on Review: Dual-mode 5G, 120Hz Display and Even Sony IMX686 Image Sensor at A Low Price

Apart from dual-mode 5G, Redmi K30 5G also features excellent camera performance and long battery life.

Backed by Xiaomi, Redmi has achieved significant results in the past year, providing multiple best-selling smartphones, including Redmi Note 7 SeriesRedmi Note 8 Series, and Redmi K20 SeriesRedmi is well-received in the smartphone market, and the brand image becomes more outstanding.

As we can see, Redmi quickly adopts the latest technology, making it one of the most dynamic brands in terms of camera performance and 5G connectivity. In December 2019, Redmi officially launched two K30 Series smartphones, namely, Redmi K30 4G and 5G.

You can refer to the previous hands-on review about Redmi K30 4G, which is powered by Snapdragon 730G SoC. Now, let’s get into more details of the Redmi K30 5G powered by Snapdragon 765G SoC.

A Dual-lens Punch-hole Display with 120Hz High Refresh Rate

Let’s begin with the screen, which we can see directly. Redmi K30 Series smartphones have a 6.67-inch LCD screen with an aspect ratio of 20:9, resolution of 2400 x 1080 (FHD+). The screen supports HDR10+, and it is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Compared with the aperture of Samsung Galaxy S10+, that of the Redmi K30 Series is slightly smaller.

Moreover, Redmi K30 Series smartphones adopt the low-distortion polarized lens and the nickel-plated LCD panel to address the problems of light leakage and yellowness with previous punch-hole displays.

There are two front cameras. The 20MP primary camera supports ultra-wide-angle panorama for group photos.

You can take three pictures in a row with the front camera by rotating the smartphone to compose an ultra-wide-angle panorama. The other front camera is a portrait blur lens. Honestly, it’s better than nothing.

The 120Hz refresh rate is the key selling point of the screen. You probably know that the high refresh rate brings a better user experience.

Compared with the traditional 60Hz display, the 120Hz one can display more frames in a second, which is means more smoothness. Of course, you can use the 60Hz and 120Hz mode according as you like.

Because of the LCD screen, Redmi K30 Series adopts the side-mounted fingerprint scanner instead of the popular in-display one. Although it doesn’t look cool, the unlocking speed and accuracy are better.

Special Back Cover Design

We saw quite a lot of interesting designs of the camera module, including that of the Redmi K30 Series. The rear camera module still consists of vertically arranged lenses. However, they are surrounded by a mirror. The design is indeed quite distinct.

The purple version of the Redmi K30 Series adopts the popular AG glass for a smooth touch and easy cleaning, as it isn’t a fingerprint magnet.

As for the detail, Redmi K30 has curved edges that make it fitter for the palm. Additionally, the special treatment along the middle frame is decorative and makes Redmi K30 feel smoother.

Redmi K30 smartphone measures 165.3mm by 76.6mm by 8.79mm. Although the smartphone packs a 4500mAh high-capacity battery, its weight is only 208g. In comparison to most 4G smartphones whose weight is over 200g, it is fine.

64MP Sony IMX686 Primary Camera

As for the most concerned rear camera module of Redmi smartphones, Redmi K30 Series feature a quad-camera module consisting of a 64MP primary camera, an 8MP 120-degree ultra-wide-angle lens (f/2.2), a 5MP macro lens (f/2.4) and a 2MP depth-sensing lens.

It’s worth mentioning that the primary camera is equipped with a Sony IMX686 image sensor, which has a 1/1.7-inch photosensitive area and supports the straight output of 64MP images whose resolution is 9248 x 6944.

By default, it can produce brighter photos with 4-in-1 pixel-binning like the previous 48MP image sensor.

Here below are sample photos without going through post-production:

Snapdragon 765G SoC & 4500mAh Large Battery

When it comes to the core configurations, the most significant difference between Redmi K30 4G and 5G is that the latter uses the recently launched Snapdragon 765G SoC. At the same time, the former uses the Snapdragon 730G SoC.

The Snapdragon 765G SoC adopts a 7nm+EUV process integrated with the X52 modem. It also supports MMW, as well as TDD and FDD frequency bands under 6GHz. The download speed can reach up to 3.7Gbps.

As for the widely concerned 5G connectivity, Redmi K30 5G supports n41 and n78 frequency band.

Let’s have a look at the performance. CPU uses the Kryo 475 architecture, which consists of a 2.4GHz core, a high-performance core @2.2GHz, and six 1.8GHz cores for power-efficiency.

The GPU has been upgraded to Adreno 620. According to official data, the GPU performance of Snapdragon 765G SoC is 10% higher than that of Snapdragon 765 SoC.

When it comes to battery life, Redmi K30 5G incorporates a 4500mAh battery, which is more than satisfying for a day’s use. Additionally, the 5G version supports the 30W flash charge (the 4G version supports 27W flash charge).

According to our test, it takes only 10 minutes to charge Redmi K30 5G from 1% to 25%; 30 minutes to 72% charged; 50 minutes to 95% charged, and only 67 minutes to fully charge.

Also Comes with Full-featured NFC, IR Blaster

Besides the above-mentioned features, Redmi K30 5G also offers the frequently used full-featured NFC with which you can use the smartphone as a transit card, an access card for offline payment, or opening the door to your car.

What’s more, Redmi K30 5G also provides the 3.5mm headphone jack favored by gamers and the IR blaster, which is typical for Xiaomi smartphones. In particular, the latter is practical for controlling home appliances.

Redmi K30 5G provides three options, including the 6GB+64GB, 6GB+128GB and 8GB+128GB variant. Their prices are 1999 yuan, 2299 yuan, and 2599 yuan, respectively. If you have a relatively big budget, it’s better to go for the high-end version.
