One plus 7 Pro, as a non-gaming mobile phone, adopted the 90 Hz screen in the first half of the year and obtained the DisplayMate A+ rating, in less than half a year, many mobile phone manufacturers introduce a 90 Hz screen, which seems to mark the advance of the screen revolution.

So what exactly is the 90Hz screen that allows mobile phone manufacturers around the world to follow suit? 

I will give you a general introduction:

In fact, Hertz is the frequency, and all moving pictures that we can see are composed of images in frames. The number of frames that can be turned over in one second represents the number of Hertz.

In a word, the frequency is higher, the picture is more consistent, so the more details are displayed.

Take a computer monitor, for example, the game veteran in a large-scale game competition will choose a computer equipped with a 144 Hz screen, and the difference between the 144 Hz screen and the ordinary screen can be seen in the following picture.

In the same movement process, there is a completely different trajectory.

On the visual aspects, if the enemy in the computer game is moving continuously on the 144Hz screen, but the 60Hz screen is jumping and flashing, how can this win the game?

The situation for the mobile phone is similar. Although we haven’t the need for the large-scale game competition in the computer, compared to the low refresh rate, the high refresh rate will send more information to us, and the game screen will be more consistent.

The experience is that every touch is smoother and more seamless.

The sensory improvement for the users is obvious.

For example, text switching is smoother and less annoying; the pictures in a high-frame video can be displayed more completely, and more details can be captured; playing some real-time games in a high frame rate mode for a more immersive experience.

Despite the above advantages, the promotion of 90Hz still encountered some small obstacles.

As mentioned above, 90 images are displayed in one second on a 90Hz screen, but the current App usually adapts to a 60Hz screen, which means only 60 images are prepared.

So the question is, 90 minus 60 is 30, 30 frames are missing in that one second!

In order to let everyone know this result more easily, we simulated the scene of a lower refresh rate material on a higher refresh rate screen in the actual shooting.

The upper part of the figure below only gives low refresh rate material but shows a high refresh rate image, and the lower part is what the high refresh rate image should look like.

If we take a close look, the upper part is far less fluid than the lower part of the same scene. This is because the material given above is not enough to support us to see all the details clearly.

If the low refresh rate material doesn't match with a high refresh rate screen, this is what it looks like!

Obviously, mobile phone manufacturers are unwilling to accept the fact that it affects the sensory experience of users, so it is unrealistic to force a high refresh rate.

Therefore, in order to better cater to the public, most manufacturers can only accommodate those 60Hz Apps and compatible them downward in many cases even if the hardware reaches 90Hz.

Not every App can show a perfect performance on a 90Hz screen.

However, compatibility is only a temporary choice. To better explore the value of the 90Hz screen is what manufacturers should do.
