Why Xiaomi renamed the Redmi K20 global version as Mi 9T?

Xiaomi has a global presence and remains to be one of the best-selling smartphone companies around the world, mainly because of its quality and affordability. 

However, what makes them such a best-selling company is their strategic thinking and targeted brand advertising in different markets. 

You might be wondering that Xiaomi Mi 9T and Xiaomi Redmi K20 have the same hardware and software specifications, yet their model names are different. Mi 9T and K20 are the same smartphones, just the branding of their model name is different. 

One of the key reasons behind the different branding and marketing of this smartphone is that the European and American people are more familiar with the Xiaomi Mi series rather than Redmi. Whereas as in China and India, people are more familiar with Redmi. 

When it comes to global brand positioning, Xiaomi Mi is better known by most people as compared to Redmi. Though the Redmi brand is part of Xiaomi today, most of the people around the world consider Redmi as a separate brand and thus have a lesser brand value. This is the reason why Xiaomi renamed the Redmi K20 global version as Xiaomi Mi 9T. Regardless of their model name, the specifications of both these smartphones remain the same. However, there are a few slight differences.

In terms of hardware specifications, Xiaomi Mi 9T and Xiaomi Redmi K20 have the same specifications. However, there are a few differences in the designs of these two smartphones. Not many people might notice the change in design, but when you look closely towards the backside of these smartphones - there is a slight difference. 

At the back panel of Xiaomi Redmi K20, you can read the word "Redmi", whereas, for Xiaomi Mi 9t, you can see the Xiaomi Mi logo. 

Apart from this, there is no difference in the design. Both of them are the same. Some other differences are with the type of screen available, 3G/4G Network and NFC technology. Mi 9T has AMOLED display with NFC capabilities, whereas for K20 it is super AMOLED and NFC is available in China only. 

In terms of similarity, there is a lot to talk about. Both Mi 9T and K20 has the same processor of Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 with 2.2 GHz octa-core processor. They have a screen size is 6.39 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels

In terms of camera, they have a triple camera set up at the back that consists of 48.0MP + 13.0MP + 8.0MP and a pop-up front selfie camera of 20.0MP. 

Both these smartphones feature Corning Gorilla Glass, GPS, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. They have a non-removable battery with 4000 mAh capacity. The 18W fast charger greatly reduces the charging time. 

The Redmi K20 and Xiaomi Mi 9T run on the Android 9.0 operating system and MIUI 10. 

There is a 3.5 mm jack featuring active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic. They feature an under-display fingerprint sensor to unlock your phone.

There isn't much to differentiate between the two smartphone devices, as they have the same processor, camera setup and operating system. The only difference lies with screen type, 3G/4G Network, and the NFC feature as stated above. Both smartphones make use of the same sensor for their fingerprint technology. 

Thus, it is not possible to differentiate much between the two devices as both of them practically are the same. However, in terms of pricing, there is a bit of a difference. While the Redmi K20 is available for $436 on, the Xiaomi Mi 9T is available for only $329.99 on 


Both Xiaomi Mi 9T and Xiaomi Redmi K20 have the same specs as discussed above. However, even after having the same hardware and other specifications, Mi 9T is the best-selling smartphone device on This is mainly due to its model name – "Xiaomi Mi 9T." 

Some of the reasons that make it the best-selling device are the lower price point, better 3G/4G network, and NFC technology.
