Doogee is a Chinese brand based in Shenzhen specializing in the design and development of high-end Android smartphones. The particular segment of solid phones targets a fairly specific clientele. Indeed whether it is for work, outdoor activities or by chronic awkwardness, the buyer will turn to these atypical models. Unfortunately, using an indestructible phone usually involves making some concessions on certain quality criteria. The Doogee S95 Pro seems to want to make everyone agree. It presents a technical sheet worthy of the greatest. Will he keep his promises? We tested it.

Presentation of the Doogee S95 pro

We have for this test the full version of this Doogee S95 Pro. That is to say composed of the telephone and its two additional modules. Upon unpacking, we have two boxes stamped with the brand and the model. In the first, we find the phone, its fast USB-C charger and an additional protective glass. In the second, we therefore find the two complementary magnetic modules. These consist of a 6 w autonomous speaker and a 3500 mAh backup battery.

The S95 Pro, Doogee's latest addition, is physical proof that a solid phone can perform. We indeed find a device with 8/128 GB of memory running on Android 9 Pie and powered by the Octa-core Helio P90 processor. Its 6.3 inch IPS FHD + LCD screen has a resolution of 2180 X 1080 Pixels. A non-removable 5150 mAh battery ensures good comfort of autonomy. The dimensions of 168 x 79.3 x 13.8 mm will be suitable for large hands. The weight of 284 grs without the modules is the price to pay to obtain the IP 68 classifications as well as the military standard IP 69K / MIL STD 810G.

Getting started with the Doogee s95 Pro

The first impression when you take this S95 Pro in hand is that of a neat finish. The plastics seem solid and the 4X4 tire type corner reinforcements provide comfort. The presentation of the rear is superb. Indeed, the choice of the carbon effect and the gold strapping of the optics give a strong identity to the device. The power and volume keys are easy to reach. The same is true for the side fingerprint reader. We will however regret its side embedded in the chassis. This in effect means having to use the thumb edge and not the flat surface to unlock the device. The helping hand is however fast and the facial recognition, very reactive quickly makes forget this annoyance. On the left side we find a programmable button with three functions, what is interesting. Note also the absence of jack.

The golden rim and the carbon effect of the back of this Doogee S95 produce a beautiful effect.

Regarding the performance of this Doogee S95 Pro, Android 9 Pie is fluid and responsive. The applications are linked without flinching. And several tasks can be opened without signs of slowing down. Indeed the Helio p90 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz coupled with 8 GB of RAM make it a workhorse. No slowdown observed during games or video tests. Its AnTuTu Benchmark score places it just below the Xiaomi Mi9 SE and above the Oppo Realme 5 Pro.

The modular accessories are positioned behind the device. The magnets are strong enough to hold the whole. The 6 W speaker provides powerful sound. Its foot allows it to put the S95 Pro in landscape mode and thus to enjoy a film or a series by having a more comfortable sound structure. In addition, its autonomy announces 10 hours of use which is rather interesting. The second module is therefore a 3500 mAh battery extension. This will therefore not allow the 5150 mAh to be fully charged but will bring additional autonomy.

The additional module is fixed by magnets to the rear of the device.

The photo, superb

On the photo side, Doogee didn't do things by halves. We find on the back a triple sensor of 48/8/8 Mpx. The main Sony IMX582 Exmor RS CMOS sensor of 48 MP offers exceptional rendering and sharpness. The highlights are respected and the contrasts present.

The main sensor of 48 MP of the S95 Pro gives a good rendering and respects the high and low lights.

The other two 8MP sensors are dedicated to a 117-degree wide-angle and Bokeh portrait mode. We also find an artificial assistance able to recognize among 15 defined scenes and adapt the settings accordingly. HDR of course is present, but uses a lower pixel mode. On the front side we find a 16 Mpx sensor. The rendering is well represented and the chromatography well respected. Night mode is also effective and provides a significant increase in brightness.

And the competition?

It must be said that to stay one step ahead of the competition, brands offering outdoor phones also compete in creativity. The IP 68 classification as well as the standards of protection and resistance to falls are identical and therefore do not deserve that we dwell on it more. Crosscall offers an action camera on its Trekker X4 . This technical feat raises the bar. Also its Core x4 presented in early February 2020 is equipped with a 48 MP sensor as well as a push to talk function. The CatPhone S 61 offers the thermal camera as well as the laser measurement and is offered at almost 900 Euros.

Regarding smartphones 100% made in China, we find technical specifications identical to the Doogee S95 Pro. First, Ulefone offers its Armor 7 . 8/128 GB, supported by the Helio P90 processor and offering a triple rear photo sensor of 48/16/8 MP. it is offered at a price of less than € 500. In the equally interesting twin brothers series we have Blackview . This brand scored a good point with its BV 9800 Pro having the thermal camera and offers its latest model the BV 9900.This one, available from March, will also have characteristics identical to the S95 Pro. The quality of Blackview devices and their competitive prices place them on the same level as Doogee and Ulefone. The aesthetic choice will make the big difference.

In conclusion

The Doogee s95 pro is undoubtedly the missing link that will democratize the outdoor phone segment. It is indeed powerful and its finishes give it a racy side. We also appreciate its wireless and fast charging capabilities. The modules are interesting accessories but not necessarily essential. Personally, I have only worked with solid and enduring phones for a few years. I take them with me during my outdoor activities or on construction sites that I take care of. Thanks to its exceptional photo characteristics for this price segment and its technical capabilities, it is for me today one of the best in its category.
