Cubot KINGKONG MINI vs. Cubot KINGKONG vs. Cubot KINGKONG 3 Comprehensive Reviews: Full Specs, Performance, Design, and Price

Before the release of the Cubot KingKong, Cubot is a more or less unknown brand, most especially in the Western region. However, the release of the rugged KingKong model changes the sales dynamic of the company globally. The 5-inch smartphone offers a moderately fast SoC in a sturdy, weighty, and waterproof compartment.

After a while, the Chinese firm decided to offer something better by releasing the KingKong 3. Compared to KingKong, several improvements in areas such as battery power, screen display, storage size, processor, and camera quality were found in KingKong 3. However, as you would expect, the improved product came with a higher price compared to the early model – although when compared to many outdoor smartphones, it is still relatively affordable.

Fortunately, Cubot has decided to release a new product, which is compact, technologically advanced, and yet comes with a reasonable price tag, in KingKong Mini – a product branded as the smaller KINGKONG for bigger performance and easier use.

However, whether this newly released product is truly a “small KingKong for bigger performance and easier use” or not, you will find out in this review as we compare it with the previous two models, namely KingKong and KingKong 3. Enjoy reading!

Cubot KINGKONG MINI vs. Cubot KINGKONG vs. Cubot KINGKONG 3 comparison: full specs, performance, design, and price

◆ Full Specification

KingKong Mini features Mediatek Helio A22 processor and a PowerVR GE8320 video adapter. With these features and the inbuilt 3GB RAM, this model will provide low-medium graphics settings for several demanding games.

Truly, considering the dimension of this product, the comfort during gameplay may not be exceptional as that of King Kong 3; however, the experience will be good enough to enjoy.

Furthermore, concerning the operating system, Kingkong Mini works on the high-performing Android 9.0 compared to the Nougat 7.0 and Android 8.1 found in KingKong and KongKong 3 models, respectively.

Understandably, the camera is one of the primary reasons why several people purchase a smartphone. In this regard, KingKong Mini features a 13MegaPixel rear camera and 8Megapixel front camera – a similar quality to the KingKong model. Although the KingKong 3 holds a better quality with its 16 + 2MP dual rear camera and 13MP front camera, considering the price of the Mini model, obviously, it offers excellent value for money.

When it comes to memory, KingKong Mini offers an impressive size with its 3GB Ram and 32GB ROM, plus a Micro SD card slot that can support close to 128GB – the right balance between the storage sizes found in KingKong and KingKong 3.

Just as the KingKong 3 uses a dual nano sim card slot, KingKong Mini is also designed with two nano sim cards

Speaking of networking features, the newly released model works on various frequencies including 2G (GSM): 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz 3G (WCDMA): 850 / 900 / 2100 MHz: Band: B1/ 3/ 7/ 8/ 19/ 20. However, the most impressive aspect is that despite its low cost, it works with 4G (FDD-LTE) network type, whereas among the shortcomings of the KingKong model is its inability to support LTE and 5-GHz Wi-Fi networks. Also, the new product supports GPS, GLONASS, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections.

Another essential component to consider is the battery. Here, although KingKong Mini has the least battery capacity among the three models, it features a modest battery size of 2000mAh. Interestingly, the device is designed with energy-efficient hardware, which ensures that the smartphone lasts for at least 6 hours of active screen time and 25 hours of talk time. Also, the battery is capable of working in the hard mode for about 6 to 7 days while it will remain active for at least two days in the normal mode – not bad for a relatively small priced asset, right?

Other features available in the new model include sensor service such as notifications led, light sensor, gyroscope, accelerometer, Face ID, compass, and proximity sensor. While most of these sensors are available in the other two models (i.e., Kingkong and KingKong 3), you won’t find gyroscope and face recognition sensors in the Kingkong model. Also, it features speakers, microphones, head jack, and comes with an audio processor.

◆ Performance

Now that you know what to expect as components and features from the Kingkong Mini model, let’s shed light on its performance and see how it fair when compared to the two previous models.

Over time, Cubot has improved the performance of its KingKong series. The KingKong model features a MediaTek MT6580M processor, which is an SoC designed for simple smartphones and tablets. Some of the lapses of this processor include occasional freezes and dropped frames. Also, the ARM Mali-400 MP2 didn’t help the matter either as it fails to support the majority of the modern graphic interfaces.

However, with the birth of KingKong 3, there is much improvement as its MediaTek Helio P23 supports a wide range of apps, including several modern benchmarks. Now, the newly released model comes with a Mediatek Helio A22 processor and a PowerVR GE8320, which ensures apps run better and supports low-medium graphics display.

Also, with the Android 9.0 OS and 3.0 ROM, the number of freezes has reduced significantly, and more apps are compatible compared to the KingKong model.

◆ Design

Starting from appearance, the KingKong Mini is designed with a similar level of ruggedness as the KingKong and the KingKong 3 models. The compartment is structured using rubber, polycarbonate, and some metal elements.

Compared to the KingKong 3 and KingKong boasting a screen display of 5.5-inch and 5-inch respectively, the newly released model comes with a smaller size of a 4-inch screen display. Also, the new product possesses a very unusual screen resolution of 1080 by 540 pixels, which offers a pleasing brightness and contrast.

Compared to the previous two models, the King Kong Mini is shorter, considering its 119mm by 58mm by 12.1mm (H/W/T) dimension. Also, with its 157g weight, it is less weighty compared to the 280g and 246g of Kingkong 3 and KingKong models, respectively.

Verdict: Kingkong Mini is truly the little Giant

From this review, although Kingkong Mini may not possess the high-end features and battery power of the KingKong 3, it offers much in terms of performance and far better than the Kingkong model, not to mention its affordable price.

The Kingkong Mini serves as the right balance between the two previous models – In other words, it is genuinely a KingKong for “better performance and easier use.”
