Cubot X19 Review: Best Budget Phone In 2019

A month or so has passed since I got the Cubot X19 on my hands and all I can say is …wow !!!

I have seen many reviews before I received Cubot X19 and most of the reviewers regarded this phone as the Best Budget phone or the miracle of Cubot.

After one month of use and multiple tests, I’ve found that this phone has lots to offer at an affordable price.


Cubot X19 is equipped with the MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763T) SoC, including an Octa-Core CPU which is very powerful. Two different timings for the first 4 cores and 4 remaining cores, more specifically 4x 2.5 GHz ARM Cortex-A53 + 4x 1.6 GHz ARM Cortex-A53.

We ran AnTuTu synthetic benchmark and the result was 93585, pretty impressive for a budget smartphone. Moreover, it uses LPDDR4X dual channel which is the latest RAM available and its speed reaches 1600 MHz, great!

So far …so good for a budget phone.

Not forget to mention that the GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) is the ARM Mali-G71 MP2, a dual-core graphics card which runs at 770 MHz.
It is clear that this CPU can play most of the games available at Google Play but has hard times with heavy games.

For sure, nobody expects to buy a budget smartphone for gaming.

Finally, we tested the internal storage of Cubot X19 and the results were more than persuading.

In fact, the 64 GB eMMc 5.1 internal storage was tested with Androbench and the results were: Sequential Read: 281.91 MB/s and Sequential Write: 209.26 MB/s.

In my experience, the Sequential Write is pretty high. Please keep in mind that well-known devices with UFS 2.1 have Sequential Write under 170-180 MB/s.

Why is the sequential write speed important? 

The answer is: unlike HDD that we use or used at our PCs and they store data randomly, the eMMC or even SSD write their data sequentially.
It is certain that sequential read applies more to large files and that is why we are focusing at Sequential Read/Write.

In everyday use like social media or browsing, it is necessary for images/videos, etc. to be stored firstly at our internal storage, so we want Sequential Write speeds as high as we can get!

On the other hand, Sequential Read is useful for reading stored files and the 281.91 MB/s is pretty fast for eMMC 5.1.

For me, it is a 10 out of 10 for the CPU, RAM, GPU, internal storage because of such an amazing price!!!


The screen of the Cubot X19 is very very bright…

Nowadays, people prefer to use smartphones more and more than tablets or even computers, we see people browsing or chatting most of the time but the hard time is when someone is trying to read something at a very shiny day.

Trust me this phone has 450 cd/m2 which is more than enough brightness for every situation.

Its screen is a 2.5D curved LCD IPS screen sized 5.93 inches and the aspect ratio of this Full Hd screen is 18:9.

What is important here is the high PPI (Pixel Per Inch) that the Cubot X19 screen has which is 407 PPI.

For the fewer tech enthusiasts, more PPI is equal to more detailed picture here is the reason why this happens:

For the lovers of the technical data the screen uses 16.7 million colors, it is GFF Full lamination and the contrast ratio is 1300:1.

Also, it covers 78.63% of the device’s front area.

And here is the first negative of Cubot X19: although its screen is scratch-resistant it is not Gorilla Glass.

For many people, this dissuades them from buying a smartphone but not for me… as I use tempered glass to protect all my devices even rugged phones.

Body and input/output

Cubot X19 is made of plastic and metal. More specifically, the frame of the smartphone is metal, while the back is plastic. It is not matte but glossy. In other words, the phone shines when it moves.

At the upper part, we can see the 3.5mm audio jack port; while at the right side, we can see the most commonly used buttons, including the power button and the volume buttons.

On the other side (left side), we can see only the SIM card tray which can house Nano SIM card + Nano SIM card/micro SD card (up to 128GB).
At the lower side of Cubot X19, we can see the speaker and microphone holes, while in the middle, there is the USB Type-C port.

The speaker is loud and good enough, but not perfect… Okay, we don’t expect perfect sound from budget smartphones, but it is always good to inform the potential future customers about the speaker’s quality. Personally, I would rate it 8 to 8.5 out of 10.

On the other hand, the fingerprint sensor at the back of the phone is pretty fast, maybe 0.5 seconds slower than High-End devices.

Same to fingerprint sensor or maybe...even better is the phase detection. 

To be honest, it is very fast. If only there were a benchmark between Cubot X19 and High-End devices phase detection speed… The High-End devices might be slightly faster… However, in real life situations, nobody can notice the difference.

We can find bezels at the upper and lower ends of Cubot X19, while the sides of this smartphone are bezel-less.

Personally, I don’t have a problem with the bezel at the bottom, because it is small and I can use my fingers to hold the device.

The upper bezel is also narrow but it doesn’t matter. I would like a notch or a waterdrop notch display there.


2 cameras are installed at the back of the Cubot X19 which are the primary camera of 16MP and the 2 MP portrait camera.

The sensor of the primary camera is the Omnivision OV16880 and its type is Purecel.

The pixel size of the primary camera is 1.029124μm (micrometers) and the aperture size is f/2. 

I'm pretty impressed with the pixel size which promises us a detailed photo.

A smaller pixel size allows the sensor to use more pixels thus providing better image resolution.

More of the technical stuff, its ISO rating is 100-1600 and the sensor is accompanied by a dual-LED flash of 1A power.

In general, we know that Omnivision sensors are at the best mediocre to low light and that is what is happening with Cubot X19, too.

We found no problem in the strong light, but in the low light environment, the photo blurs a little.

If I should give a rating of the back camera, I would give 6.5 to 7 out of 10.

On the other side, the selfie camera is pretty good. 

Sony’s IMX219PQ Exmor R delivers good selfie even better than my expectations, as I first tested the primary camera and I thought Cubot would give all the power there.

Its aperture size is f/2.2, its type is Cmos Bsi (backside illumination) and the pixel size is 1.124μm (micrometers).

I have written so many things about the selfie camera, more important and probably more exciting is that it’s an 8MP camera… Good job, Sony !!!

Operating System

The operating system of Cubot X19 is Android 8.1 Oreo, but Cubot announced that there would be an update to Android 9 Pie.

I am happy because the company just doesn’t just sell smartphones but they support them as well, by launching OS updates or updates for fixing bugs.

For tracking/positioning, Cubot X19 uses GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS.

Our tests found a good accuracy of 2 meters!


Cubot X19 uses a 4000mAh Li-Polymer battery, and its charger is capable of 5V/2A charging (10watts).

Although the charger is not the fastest in the world, the screen-on time is long. Benchmarking it with PCMark showed a good result of 11h and 17 minutes.

However, who is stress testing the phone so much in real life? I would estimate 1.5 days of battery life under normal use of the phone.


Finally, here comes the conclusion which is probably the hardest part of the review.

In general, there are numerous devices out there to meet your needs and it would be unfair to compare this low-cost device with mid-range smartphones or high-end ones.

Bear in mind that this is a low-cost smartphone provides us with 4.000 mAh battery, beauty mode, fast processor, latest RAM type (LPDDR4X) and fast eMMC internal storage, these are pretty enough for users who need an affordable but uncompromising smartphone.

Yes, the back camera is mediocre. If you really want a super camera, you should avoid this model, but for me, this is the Best Budget phone out there at this moment!!!
