Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Hands-on Review: Two Months Later!

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE comes with a teardrop notch and has a 5.97-inch display with 1080 x 2340 Full HD resolution.

As the device is smaller than 6 inches, it fits perfectly into your hand and can you can use it single-handedly. The device has an elegant glass back, whereas fingerprints will leave on it in most cases, so I recommend using the cover provided in the box.

Let us get into more details and see the complete review of the Mi 9 SE, including the design, performance, battery, and camera.

It has a super AMOLED screen with a 5.97-inch display and has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a pixel density of 432 PPI.

The screen of the device is not as good as Mi 9 but offers realistic colors, wide viewing angles, and automatic brightness management. The device has an in-display fingerprint sensor, that is as effective as you can get. It unlocks the device with superior speed and without any delays.

At the bottom of the device, you get a USB Type-C Port and a single speaker. On the side of the phone, you have a volume rocker and a power button that are easily accessible with single hand use. I never had a problem to use the buttons with my hand. However, the downside is that the device does not have a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the reverse side of the Mi 9 SE, you've got triple camera lens setup, which we will discuss more in the latter half of the post.

Overall, Mi 9 SE remains robust, comfortable, attractive in all aspects of its design, though there are not many changes in the design compared with other phones of Xiaomi, like Mi 9.

The device uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 chip and comes with 6 GB of RAM. As a result, I haven't met any problem with multi-tasking. I was able to run dozens of applications simultaneously, being able to switch them back and forth without any performance drops.

Mi 9 SE performs marvelously, suitable for any task that you want to execute. Even while testing the device with CPU and GPU demanding games like PUBG, I can run other Apps without any problems or noticeable slowdowns.

However, at times, the Mi 9 SE gets a bit warm while I am playing the games, but it is not hot by any means and does not have any impact on the gaming experience. I haven't encountered any delays yet.

The single speaker at the bottom of the device works surprisingly well, offering excellent quality of sound, which is fantastic for a mid-range device.

The experience of watching videos and movies on YouTube and Netflix is extraordinary, with quality sound. I would like to have a 3.5 mm jack, but Xiaomi Mi 9 SE doesn’t have, which is a bit disappointing.

The device comes with a 3070 mAh battery, which is somewhat limited in comparison to the heavy usage of mobile devices these days. The Mi 9 SE tends to last for up to a day on a single charge. Do not expect anything more from a 3070 mAh battery.

I have rather heavy use of my device; however, surprisingly, the Mi 9 SE almost lasts for the entire day. You get an 18W charger along with the phone that can provide up to 50% of battery life within 30 - 40 minutes of charging. You can get it fully charged within 90 minutes.

I had a screen-on time of about 4 hours with Wi-Fi connection enabled, and after that, I still got 15% remaining battery percentage. After all, the battery of Mi 9 SE isn't the worst part of the device, compared with other mid-range phones.

The 20 MP front camera has an aperture of f/2.0 that enables you to take good quality selfies even in low light conditions because it supports HDR. In addition to this, Xiaomi also provides AI support that allows you to make use of the beauty mode to make your selfies to the utmost perfection.

It has a triple camera setup that includes the primary camera of 48 MP with an aperture of f/1.75, the same as Mi 9. The other two cameras are 13 MP wide-angle having an aperture of f/2.4 and telephoto lens of 8 MP with an aperture of f/2.4.

The camera is undoubtedly one of the best features of Mi 9 SE and offers outstanding quality pictures. You can take detailed and fascinating color photos with the device using the primary camera. The main camera of 48 MP provides better picture quality in low light, compared to the other two camera lenses.

Apart from that, you can even shoot video of 4K UHD quality. The video quality is unrivaled among the mid-range phones.

Final Thoughts

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is a moderately good device that is compact and convenient to use. It has all the flagship features in it and that too at a relatively low price.

With the high-resolution screen, sufficient battery life, and top-notch camera, the phone is a good bet if you are looking to buy a mid-range smartphone device which offers optimum performance.
