iPEGA PG - 9083 Retractable Bluetooth Large Gamepad Controller with USB

I bought this controller mainly to use it with my Nintendo Switch.

The grips are great, mostly if you compare it with de the joy cons. Loved the face buttons, and, of course, the d-pad.

I liked the the "inclined" way they put the L/R buttons.

It pairs fairly quickly to your switch witch is good, because you have to pair it everytime you put your console to sleep.

The battery lasts reasonable ammount of time (didn`t count it).

The controller is pretty light, which makes it preety confortable do use.

Althought, there are two big flaws that are worth of notice:

The first one is that the face buttons are displayed as a Xbox controlles witch menas, X,Y,B,A. And the nintendo layout is Y,X,A,B.

The problem is, unlike the X One controller, which when you press A, the system read like the B button and etc. On this controller the system read the buttons the way they are ( A is A, B is B), what makes it terrbile to use on games that you can´t remap the buttons. You can´t just use your muscle memory to press the right buttons, you have to flip your mind to press the "jump" button or the "sword" button in places that your not use to press. Andf oyu have to do that everytime you play your switch with your ipega 9083. If you put your switch in dock mode and use another controller, you have to "remap" you mind ( and the button, depending of the game) every time. And it sucks.

The other big flaw is the analog stick, you won´t aim with that properly because they have huge deadzones taht makes that headshot you want nearly impossible. And since this controller doens´t have motions controls (and i don´t count it as a "con", looking at the price of uit) to bypass this problem, you are screwed.

So, if you wanna play it with most of the 2d games that you can remap the buttons, or games like DK Tropical Freeze, where the A and B buttons do the same thing, you´re fine, go ahead because it worth it.

But for anyone else, i don`t recommend it.


This deadzone problem goes for the android user too. I don´t have an IOS device.

The controller works perfectly. The device itself feels very durable and solid and doesn't seem to break any time soon.

The buttons are of very high quality, comparable to an Xbox One controller. The analog sticks are smooth and they are convex making them very easy to grip. The shoulder buttons are clicky and work without a hitch. The lock/release mechanism seems solid and holds the device firmly and has a very satisfying click to it when locking. The controller pairs with an Android phone running on 8.0 Oreo and a Windows 10 PC without any issue. The D-Pad is very good and feels very smooth, it's much better than Xbox One's D-Pad for fighting games but not as good for platformers as I feel it's not clicky enough. It's not mushy though, think of like Switch Pro controller but a bit easier to press the buttons around.

Suggestion

There is interference when you are connecting the controller to the phone while trying to stream to it simultaneously. If you are using a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi with weak to medium signal, you will drop the connection a lot. If your router can handle 5GHz or outputs a very strong signal, you should be fine.

The buttons positions are all wrong. It's basically a reversed PS4 controller setup with analogs on top and face buttons and D-Pad on the bottom. While instead it should use a layout similar to the one on the Xbox One or Switch Pro controller. I bought the product knowing it fully well, it's not really a con but a slight annoyance. Some people might prefer this layout and works really well for FPS games.

The lock/release mechanism is too close to the right side when it's not extended making it difficult for your right hand to rest comfortably. It's not an issue on larger devices, say something like 6"+. You can also trade grip for clearance for your right hand and extend the mechanism a bit so that you rest your right hand comfortably with enough clearance for it.

Honestly, the cons are pretty minor and far outweighed by the pros.

I would recommend this controller to people that prefer to play mobile games with a controller. The buttons feel durable and long lasting, not cheap like other bootleg controllers. It also last many hours on one charge. It will expand to any length or width your device is. Although it's great, personally, I felt it was a little big for my hands. When I'm at a comfortable position, thumbs directly on the joysticks, I can't press the d-pad or xyba buttons comfortably; I have to shuffle my hands. But this controller feels high quality for a low price, so it is recommended to anyone considering this product.

I rate this 4 stars because of the issue with an sketchy app that you need to play loaded to the brim with ads. I haven't gotten the app to work yet aswell but that might be incompetence. If you want to check it out it's called Octopus. It would be fine but this app is what the instructions direct you too

Anyway the reason I actually got this for is emulator play. On that it hasn't been a problem and works fine with MyBoy and the advanced version.
The controller is larger then I expected but it's not a hassle and I got a used to it quickly.

Things you need to improve for Nintendo Switch!!

1- Vibration ("8-bit do" has this similar price)

2- Motion Control ("8-bit do" has this similar price)

3- Pairing can be painfull, you have to do it every time after you lock the switch(same for android Pairing from scratch after each session)

4- Better grip system, have to keep track of those rubber sticks is not funny (I switch a lot between systems and modes)

5- HUGE HUGE problem, button layout IS BACKWARDS, please relesase a firmware update or a revision, for Nintendo Switch makes so hard to play on top of the other issues
