Original Xiaomi Mi TDS Pen Tester

The instrument measures the so-called TDS (total dissolved solids), or the total mineralization of water, that is, the content of inorganic salts (calcium, magnesium), organic components (ammonium acetate) and heavy metals (chromium, zinc, lead, copper).

TDS is measured in PPM, that is, part per million, or particles per million. In other words, 300 ppm means that there are about 300 units of detectable substances in a million water particles.

Xiaomi Mi TDS Pen measures TDS between 0 and 1000+ PPM. Remember the meaning of these indicators can always be seen from the image above, but in practice it is useful to remember only that less than 50 is very pure water, 100-300 is ordinary water, usually from a tap, 1000+ - water not suitable for drinking.

Appearance and device
Externally, the water tester Xiaomi resembles a conventional thermometer, and by the way, it really knows how to measure the water temperature (although it does not show it), in order to take this index into account when determining the mineralization, and to eliminate its effect on the results.

On both sides Xiaomi Mi TDS Pen is closed with caps. Under one there are two batteries type LR44 (come with the kit), and under the other - a probe tester made of titanium.

On the device itself there is only one on / off button, and to get the results it is enough to lower the probe of the water tester, after which it will instantly show the TDS level.

Testing
We did not check the results in the laboratory, but the values ​​shown by Xiaomi Mi TDS Pen are quite in line with expectations.

Four types of water were compared from one pipe:

Hot
Cold
Filtered (reverse osmosis filter)
Filtered (reverse osmosis filter), passed through the mineralizer
Hot water, which is also often called technical, predictably showed the worst result in the region of 300+ units. Cold water was slightly cleaner - 240 units.

As a device for water treatment, a Ukrainian standard filter was used: a reverse osmosis membrane (manufactured in the USA), and several prefilter filters.

The usual filtered water showed a result just above 20 PPM, that is, according to TDS standards it is very clean. If it is passed through the mineralizer in addition, the predicted TDS will increase, but not much. Up to 30 PPM, so that water can still be considered clean ..

The TDS level is measured in parts per million (ppm) or mg/L. The ideal TDS reading for drinking water should be less than 300ppm.

The Mi TDS Pen is quite easy to use. It includes two button cells already, so it’s ready to use out of the box. You will just need to take the pen cap off, place the head of the pen under water, then the TDS reading will immediately show up on the display.

tested it with the tap water and purified water in my house and the results seem to be accurate. The tap water has the TDS level of 170 ppm while the purified water is much lower at 14 ppm.

Therefore, I highly recommend the Mi TDS Pen if you want to check water quality or performance of your water purifying system.

I was not sure in the quality of the water what we are drinking home, this is why i was ordering the product. The quality of the product is really good, really easy to use, just put the pen to the water what you would like to check and press the button. If you are pressing that button again, device is turning off. Really fast you can check the result. I was comparing the water at home with some mineral waters, and the mineral waters had a little bit better (lower) scores. Unfortunately the box and the small guide is only in Chinese, but luckily on the Gearbest website you can see in English which score is meaning which water quality. The product has a cap, what is saving the pen. You don't need to buy batteries, the pen is containing the 2 batteries, what you can reach if you remove the cap the other side of the pen. Recommended product.
