About Temperature Strips

If you are looking for a forehead thermometer at an economic cost, this liquid crystal fever scan strip should be the best bet.

Temperature sticker is not just a Celsius thermometer but also a Fahrenheit thermometer, so it’s quick to read in Fahrenheit degrees.

Let’s learn about temperature strips - the most affordable forehead thermometer at the lowest price.

What is a forehead temperature strip?

A forehead temperature strip is an inexpensive color indicator label medical device used for forehead temperature monitoring.

As a self-adhesive temperature indicator label like other urine or aquarium thermometers, this temperature strip uses the Thermochromic Liquid Crystals (LCs) that are highly temperature-sensitive and change to many colors to continually monitor and indicate the forehead temperature.

After sticking the LCs temperature sticker on the forehead, the strip will offer a visual readout that ranges from traditional numeric displays to custom color graphics that can serve as an alert or warning.

How to read the temperature strip?

You might ask like many folks that use the temperature for the first time, what does the green, blue, and coffee (also called tan or brown) color mean on temperature strip?

As the liquid crystals are temperature-sensitive with different forehead temperature is measured to display a different color, it is necessary for us to learn the meanings of the temperature indicator label.

Blue: indicator means below the actual body temperature (unnormal).

Coffee (tan or brown): indicator means above the actual temperature (normal).

Green: indicator means the actual temperature reading (unnormal).

Black (no color change): indicator means out of the temperature measuring range.

Note: a forehead strip thermometer generally measures from 95℉ to 104℉ or 35℃ to 40℃.

Are temperature strips reusable?

The temperature strips are reusable because the Liquid Crystals (LCs) are reversible.

The built-in reversible liquid crystals start black below their temperature measuring range, go through the colors of blue, green, and coffee (tan or brown) once a certain temperature is reached, and back to black again above the temperature range.

To conclude, these reversible liquid crystal temperature stickers can be used over and over.

What are the advantages of temperature strips?

• Fever alert in coffee or blue color indicator

• Easy to read the temperature on both Celsius and Fahrenheit numeric display

• Reusable, bendable and accurate

• Instant read in 5 seconds to 15 seconds

• Easy to use

How to use a temperature strip?

Firstly, dry the forehead.
Secondly, stick the temperature strip on the forehead.
Thirdly, read the changing color of the temperature sticker.
Finally, store the temperature label after use for reusing the next time.

Note: most temperature strips are suggested to use indoors at room temperatures between 22℃ to 25℃ (72℉ to 77℉).

How to choose a thermometer?

Thermometers are the most common objects in our daily life, but there are many bewildering types of thermometers in the market. How to choose?

Firstly, figure out your intended use (for medical, cooking, or industry);

Secondly,  consider the temperature measuring technology (traditional mercury, digital or infrared thermometer), which decide the measuring accuracy and reading speed;

Thirdly, consider the hygiene and ease of use (non-contact thermometer not required to disinfect or contact type thermometer required to disinfect);

Finally, choose the thermometer based on your budget.

We picked some frequently-asked questions about thermometers for a fever. We hope it will help you before buying a thermometer.

What is the non-contact thermometer?

The non-contact thermometer (also referred to as contactless thermo) is an infrared (IR) thermometer to take the temperature from a distance without contact with the measured object.

When used as a medical thermometer, the non-contact thermometer is a hygienic temperature measuring meter to avoid cross-infection, which makes it the best thermometer for coronavirus fever.

Non-contact thermometer vs contact thermometer: how to choose?

Compared with the contact type thermometer, the no contact thermometer is more hygienic to measure body temperature without touching the measured person so that NCIT could avoid cross-infection.

Moreover, the non-contact temperature gun is simple to use and fast-responsive to display the temperature readings within seconds.

As for a contact type thermometer, you must disinfect the body thermometer every time before and after using, or it might cause cross-infection.

Besides, a contact thermometer might be chill or discomfort the baby in cold days.

How does a non-contact thermometer work?

A non-contact thermometer sometimes is also called as an infrared thermometer or laser thermometer, because the non-contact thermometer is a temperature measuring device that uses infrared technology.

The contactless thermometer is pointed at the object or person being measured to infer temperature from a ray of the thermal radiation (sometimes called black-body radiation) emitted by them and displays a temperature reading instantly on the screen.

As the shape and using resembling a gun, this non-contact IR thermometer also called a temperature gun (referred to as temp gun).

What is the non-contact thermometer used for?

Using a non-contact thermometer for body temperature is a safe way to measure the temperature of patients in a hospital without touching them, so the non-contact laser thermometer is widely used for influenza fever in the pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals.

A non-contact infrared thermometer is also helpful at home to take baby’s temperature to check for fever.

As you might know, it is hard to take a temperature in children with a contact type thermometer or an oral thermometer, because babies won’t always co-operate with you.

However, a non-contact forehead thermometer allows you to check the body temperature of a sleeping child without waking him.

During the epidemics of diseases causing fever, such as SARS coronavirus, Ebola virus, and even the latest COVID-19 novel coronavirus disease, non-contact infrared thermometers are used to check arriving travelers for fever at airports, hotels, restaurants, and other entrances.

Therefore, the non-contact temperature gun is a basal thermometer to check for coronavirus fever.

Are non-contact thermometers accurate?

Due to the contactless remote measurement, the accuracy of a non-contact thermometer is doubted by some people.

Those simple or low-grade IR thermometers may have a measurement error of about ±2℃ or ±4 ℉, but for a reliable infrared thermometer, the accuracy error is within about 1℃, and a preferable digital thermometer is accurate within about 0.2℃ or 0.4℉.

Such accuracy enables the thermometer to take an accurate surface temperature.

But note that the infrared thermometer shouldn’t be placed too close to the measured person, or it might cause a build-up heat to damage the infrared sensor. Meanwhile, the measurement error might increase with a too close distance.

How to use a non-contact thermometer?

A non-contact infrared thermometer is fabulously easy to use, even a child could use the temperature gun like a toy gun.

Gently point the thermometer at a distance of 3cm to 5cm away from the central forehead, remove the thermometer and check the temperature readings on the digital display.

If the measured forehead is perspiring, you can also check temperature over other dry body surfaces such as the wrist or neck.

For a more accurate measurement, it’s recommended to take the average temperature for three-time temperature readings.

How much is a non-contact thermometer?

A non-contact thermometer is ranged from $10 to $200. And generally, a good-quality yet cost-effective non-contact infrared thermometer for body temperature costs about $40 to $60.

You could choose the best contactless thermometer under $50, under $60, under $100 or above $100 according to your budget.

What makes the difference of more than $30 between non-contact body thermometer and contact-type digital body thermometer?

Due to the built-in accurate sensor of infrared technology, the non-contact body thermometer is almost $30 or much pricier than a contact-type digital thermometer.

Besides, adopting the technology to reduce the measuring error and radiation also increase the cost of an infrared thermometer.

Is buying a non-contact thermometer worth it?

Featured with contactless hygiene, ease of use, instant-read, and high accuracy, a non-contact thermometer is worth buying for a family with a baby. You might hesitate at the price, but it lasts long in return.

Moreover, the non-contact thermometer is the safest temperature measuring meter for a company or any organization to take the temperature of the crowds during an infectious virus outbreak.

Alternative medical thermometers to non-contact thermometers

During a shortage of non-contact infrared thermometer, contact type medical thermometers such as mercury thermometers or other digital body thermometers are great alternatives to non-contact infrared body thermometer for a family at home.

What is the standard of medical digital thermometer?

What is the best thermometer for baby?

There is no doubt that the non-contact body thermometer is the best baby thermometer.

Each family with a new-born baby should prepare a non-contact thermometer (forehead thermometer or ear thermometer) at home, so parents could take good care of the baby’s health.

What’s different with a medical thermometer?

medical thermometer (also referred to as a clinical thermometer or fever thermometer) is used to measure human or animal temperature.

According to measured in the different body locations, medical thermometers could be classified as armpit thermometeroral thermometerforehead thermometerear thermometerrectal thermometer.

The difference between a medical infrared thermometer and other IR thermo or laser thermo is the intended purpose. To simply put, a medical thermometer is a temperature meter for body temperature, it’s best for flu fever.

Non-contact thermometer vs digital thermometer vs mercury thermometer: how to choose?

The digital thermometer takes a good balance between non-contact IR thermometer and traditional mercury thermometer.

Different from the mercury thermometer of potential toxicity, a digital thermometer composed of a temperature sensor, LCD and battery is safer and easier to use.

However, you still need to disinfect the contact type digital thermometer every time before using, and baby may not co-operate with you for taking a temperature.

If possible, choosing a non-contact infrared thermometer (NCIT) will be better.

Infrared thermometer vs thermal scanner vs thermal camera: how to choose?

The thermal scanner is generally used as a maintenance tool for monitoring and inspection application in various buildings, historical monuments, and industrial equipment.

But it has gradually been used to screen travelers at the airport.

As an upgrade of the common thermal scanner, the thermal camera also called thermal imaging camera is a quick way to spot people with a fever in the commercial buildings or the entry of a block.

The thermal camera has multiple detectors measuring infrared and provides a thermal image of the surface being measured.

Compared with an ordinary infrared thermometer, the thermal camera is better suited for scanning the crowds or at a distance, as you could get a total view of the situation and instant diagnostic insights, document their temperature and get complete reports from the thermal camera.

If you are looking for a fever thermometer for business applications, choose the thermal camera.

But if your fever thermometer is intended for a family or baby, go for the infrared thermometer.

Any other types of infrared thermometers?

In addition to medical thermometers, there are cooking thermometers like meat thermometer, candy thermometer, food thermometer, turkey thermometer and grill thermometer for checking the cooking temperature; indoor thermometers and outdoor thermometers for checking the air temperature; oven thermometer and refrigerator thermometer to check for calibration and control; pool thermometer or water thermometer to check the temperature for shower or fish tank; and other industrial thermometers to check mechanical or electrical equipment for temperature. Infrared thermometers are widely used in many fields.

iHealth Infrared Forehead Thermometer Reviews:

Hello everybody! Today we unpack another cool product from Xiaomi's subbrand!
iHealth Thermometer is a compact, comfortable, and non-contact thermometer. Tell me what special can be in a thermometer? Yes, it measures the temperature, but like all things from Xiaomi is different in its stylish design, convenience, and ease of use. Made of snow-white and pleasing to the touch EKO-plastic. The anatomical shape and only one button will allow you to easily measure the temperature of both children and adults in just one second and do not survive, as in the case of a normal, mercury thermometer.
So this kind of thing should be in every house. Convenience, speed, and safety in use, here are its main advantages !!!

Great thing. Previously used only simple electro thermometers, thrust armpit, or in the well ... if the baby. You know what their accuracy is and how convenient it is to use if you have a child. There was an experience of using an infrared device inserted into the ear. I liked it, although the accuracy was not very good either.
This thermometer, I can safely say, is free from these shortcomings. No need to thrust it somewhere - a distance measurement (3-5 cm from the nose). The speed is almost instant. Accuracy - as stated + -0.1 C. A little confused at the first start (measurement), but once again looking at the sticker that came in the kit, figured out.
Collected quality. It looks elegant and sound, nothing superfluous (although it is not important for a thermometer).
In general, Mi (Xiaomi iHealth thermometer) is at its best. Very satisfied.
I would like some kind of cover (better plastic) for storage. It’s not very desirable to store separately, and the box (although it is not large) is not convenient.
Well, the price ... although comparable thermometers on the German sensor are significantly more expensive from any Philips or Siemens.
