You should purchase a drive made for recording video for best performance. The Western Digital Purple drive works for that purpose. It comes in different capacities.

I think what you are saying is, you want to view the cameras using the app, but you don't want to plug the NVR into your router. That won't work because this system uses the NVR as a hub.

Do you have to plug the camera in to or is it operated just on Wi-Fi?
You have to plug the camera in to a power source/outlet. For internet you have the choice to either use the Ethernet cable and plug them all into the box or use WiFi. I am running all four of mine off WiFi
