Great box, stupid design problems

The box is amazing, has a well built metal case, good antenna, quite ok ethernet port (maxes at 35mbits for me) and the system itself is a full version of Windows. Surprisingly enough - 2GB ram and 32GB of hdd is enough for light work. Pipo X7 plays youtube videos on IE at 1080p 60fps, but it barely plays 720p in chrome and firefox, due to lack of hardware acceleration. A bit of a deal breaker. Plays most h264 fine in Kodi tho.

- Full Windows 8
- 2GB and 32GB hdd is enough for light work
- working ethernet port, 4x usb (only 2.0), SD slot and audio out
- runs basic office apps flawlessly
- Kodi works perfect with h264/mkv material
- IE plays Youtube 1080p60 without dropping frames
- looks great

Suggestion

Pipo X7 has one main design fault and it is a major one - the cooling solution is terrible (but fixable). By default it uses a metal plate that is shielding the processor - it wasn't even glued nor had thermal pad on my device (it did had a piece of foil between tho) and it acted more like an oven chamber than an effective heat dissipation solution. Manufacturer's fix to the heat problem was to run the cpu at native 1,33ghz speed and disable the turbo. The temperatures were about 50-60°C in idle and 80°C+ in stress.

I started with what others suggested - adding radiators on top of the plate. It did help initially to bring down the temperatures down by about 10-15°C, but it wasn't enough. I finally removed the plate and glued the radiator directly to the CPU with double sided thermal tape and it made the 2.1ghz turbo mode pretty usable. I don't really use stress mode too often, but if I did, I'd recommend an active cooling solution - something like a small fan or something.

Overall i'm quite satisfied. The build quality is good, the price is very good and the specs are great. A Atom z3736f is included; while other simular boxes have a z3735. The higher turbo is especially worth if playing 1080i movies. The box also playes 3d movies (only half sbs).

As can be seen in the video the pipo starts up quite soon and is complety stable. It also can be seen that a full licenced windows is included.

Suggestion

it has a cooling problem. I replaced the heatsinks and that helped a lot. However it was better if they already included these items out of the box.

Furthermore the power button doesn't response all of the time. Sometimes i have to use this button a few times before it

Отличный домашний/офисный мини ПК - Pipo X7

Заказывал своей дочке для просмотра мультимедиа на 51' плазме, ну и иногда для игр(на сайте 4pda нашел оптимизацию этого мини ПК для нетребовательных игр и дочка спокойно играет в Rayman Legends и South Park - The Stick of Truth) Работает отлично, только вначале надо допилить охлаждение! Дочка очень довольна и мне радость:)

Amazing little PC

Great replacement for old HTPC. Runs everything I've thrown at it (well haven't tried games yet), Using a 9 inch LCD touch screen that I bought elsewhere, and I got myself a small complete PC. Also got it a pre-order price of $90, which is an AWESOME price for a small PC. Very solid and professional looking, Had no problems at all even without cooling.

Suggestion

Huge case for small internals... the board inside is probably half the size of the case, so it should've been smaller. The case is metal, so how come they never even used it to provide cooling? Antenna for the WIFI can't go more than 180 degrees (it won't go to the right). Power switch sucks, wish it can power on automatically when plugged in. Read about how hot it becomes due to inadequate cooling but can be remedied by putting some heat conductor to the case or putting in a fan.
