BAOFENG UV - 5R UHF / VHF Walkie Talkie

Like many others, this was my first radio. It is cheap enough to be disposable, and it works. I have gotten mixed signal reports based on antenna type and location, but with the right antenna and conditions I get into the repeaters just fine with good reports.They are susceptible to induced noise if you transmit with the radio close to a noise source like a wall wart transformer. Make sure you are clear of noise sources and have a clean power supply.Programming is not as bad as some make it out to be via the keypad. However CHIRP is a far superior method. Using CHIRP you can program in a welcome message, alphanumeric channel tags, and select default transmit power for each saved channel. CHIRP also allows you to program band limits, and disable transmit on selected channels. I have some public safety channels and NOAA weather Chan els programmed with transmit disabled so I can use the radio to monitor those frequencies without the risk of accidentally transmitting out of band.My biggest gripe is the lack of an S meter and the fact that some features cannot be programmed manually. Also the emergency panic button is a waste of a perfectly good button. The stock antenna works well enough for a small antenna that doesn't catch on everything, but you really need a better antenna to get the most range from it. Fortunately better antennae are cheap too.Battery life is good for about 2 or 3 days of casual receive only use.Case construction is solid, if a bit clunky looking. I did have to tighten up the but on the antenna connector after a few weeks of carrying it around, but that was easy enough.For the price it's a great value. Cheap enough to have a few.

This 2 way radio does everything. Every time I use it I find more things it will do. It is much easier to use/set up and program than the 3R and is worth the extra few pounds. Setting up the memory channels with all the variations of frequency shift. CTCSS and anything else you want to enter is so simple. Direct entry frequencies on the keypad along with DTMF. Single key entry to favorite menu locations from keypad. Duel watch works if your on FM radio when you get board with amateur band automatically switching back if you get a call. Range in built up housing areas is excellent over 7km talking to a 3R. Communicating through a UHF repeater GB3CR on a 900 foot mountain 65 miles away. All the settings are there for use on commercial repeaters and field use. A few years ago this would have cost £350 or more without half the technology.

Great radio station. It works great, the sound is good. The quality of the design is great. Speaker is good, I'm satisfied with the antenna because it catches a lot of frequencies. It's an incredible cell and very useful.

This product has anly pros: good quality, damage resist, high transmision power, lots of settings (you can setup 40 various device properties). Good battery quality: you can detache and replace (not builded in like in many phones). Charger included.

Suggestion

I bought 2 items and was forced to pay additional tax. I think would be better to pay "custom declaration protection" or order items separately.

Rugged and versatile. Was using simplex to communicate across 11 miles with no drop in signal quality. Would highly recommend it, especially for the price. High gain antenna, extra battery and programming cable are inexpensive as well.

Not the most user friendly. Need to know a little about radios or plan on learning.
